Samuel Cleared

Incoming freshman Terrence Samuel learned from the NCAA Wednesday that he has been cleared to play for Connecticut in 2013-14.

An official announcement has not come from UConn yet, but that is expected soon. Samuel, a 6-4 guard from South Shore High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., had some academic issues that arose in the last month or so.

Instead of coming to Storrs to get a head start on his freshman classes, Samuel had to repeat two high school courses in order to gain eligibility through the NCAA Clearinghouse. A source said Samuel and UConn received notification that he had been cleared on Wednesday.

Samuel will arrive in Storrs to find a crowded scene at the guard position for the Huskies. That might mean limited playing time as a freshman, but coach Kevin Ollie expects him to contribute.

"He is a pass-first guard and somebody who is really going to help us - not only in games but in practice too," Ollie said in an interview this summer.

It may be a while longer before UConn gets an answer on the eligibility of freshman forward Kentan Facey.

Facey played three seasons at Long Island Lutheran after moving from Jamaica. But since he passed a standardized test in Jamaica that could be considered the same as graduating from high school, it's possible that his eligibility clock was already ticking. Facey may be told he has to sit out one season.

NOTES: Highly touted recruit Abdul-Malik Abu, a 6-8 forward from Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire, made an official visit to UConn Wednesday. The visit was originally scheduled for last week but Abu rearranged his plans. He has visited Florida, North Carolina State and Providence. . . . Terry Lanier, a small forward from the Bronx, will visit next week. Point guard Quentin Snider, who reportedly likes UConn a great deal, will visit in late September. . . . Ellen Tripp, who has been a member of the staff of the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes at the University of Connecticut since 1998, has been named Associate Director of Athletics-CPIA and will serve as director of the program. Tripp had been serving as the Interim Director of CPIA since May 2012. Tripp will also serve on the Leadership Team for the Division of Athletics under Director of Athletics Warde Manuel.
