UConn Prospect Looking For Package Deal

The 6-foot-9 rising junior power forward / center's college plans include a current teammate.

Derrick Caracter, from Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS, has done some work since the USA Basketball's Young Men's Developmental Festival at Colorado Springs last month. And he's looking to continue his basketball career with a Scotch Plains' classmate, Lance Thomas, a 6-foor-7 combo / small forward.

"I've been working on my game a lot since getting back from Colordo," Caracter said at Thursday's 2004 ABCD camp, the first college coaches' session. This year, the annual New Jersey event is sponsored by Reebok where Sonny Vaccaro is senior director of grass roots basketball.

"I'm looking at college first, then the NBA," he said. "Lance (Thomas) and me want to continue playing together in college. We're going to go as a package deal," Caracter pointed out.

Schools currently involved with these players include Arizona, Connecticut, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kansas, North Carolina, Rutgers, Saint Joseph's, St. John's, Syracuse and Wake Forest.

Caracter, one of seven from the class of 2006 who were invited to USA Basketball's camp, appears stronger, especially on the boards. He showed a lot of energy on the floor of The Rothman Center on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J. Caracter also looks trimmer and displayed quick moves in his opening game Thursday.
