Big Forward From West Coast Lists UCONN

A big bodied forward from the West Coast has many schools interested in his skills

He might have just finished his sophomore year of high school, but big-bodied 6-8 power forward Matt Shaw has already drawn some serious looks from major Division I programs.

Shaw, who attended the Reebok ABCD Camp here in New Jersey this week, said that schools such as Connecticut, Michigan, Duke, Florida State, North Carolina, Arizona, UCLA and Southern California have already put out early feelers on him.

One school in particular has put an early press on Shaw. "Michigan seems like they really want me to go there," he said. "But I like the ACC's style of play, because they get up and down."

A member of the Michigan coaching staff visited Shaw's high school (Verbum Dei) this past spring. Shaw has since transferred to Fairfax H.S. in Los Angeles.

As a soph at Verbum Dei, Shaw averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and two assists per game.

His numbers weren't so eye-popping at ABCD, a camp known for its chuck and duck tendencies. Shaw averaged 5.3 points and 3.6 rebounds in seven camp games for the Rockets squad, but the hefty 235 pounder showed strong hands and deft passing skills for a big man.

Maybe the biggest thing missing at times is assertiveness. Shaw has the body and size to physically dominate other post players, but he didn't appear to like physical play at times. That said, his mitts make him a very adroit tapper on the offensive glass, and he's still got two more years of high school ball to figure it all out.

Following ABCD, Shaw will play with California Team Select at the Reebok Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas and then stay in Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Summer Classic with Dave Miller's California Elite squad.
