Midnight Madness For Calhoun's Charges

The upcoming week is big for the University of Connecticut. While the football team is in the midst of their first Big East season, the Huskies are hosting nationally ranked West Virginia Wed. Oct. 13th at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN, the 2004-05 seasons for UConn's national champion basketball teams are just around the corner.

NCAA rules allow division I basketball teams to begin practice on Saturday, Oct. 16th at the stroke of midnight.

Coach Jim Calhoun's 2004-05 squad will hit the floor that night with festivities starting Friday, Oct. 15 at 10:30 p.m. at Gampel Pavilion. The defending national champions will be playing without All-Americans Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon who were selected at numbers two and three in the 2004 NBA draft by the expansion-Charlotte Bobcats and Chicago Bulls, respectively.

    Note (Update 10/10/04): Newsday reported that freshman guard A.J. Price was scheduled to moved out of the Intensive Care Unit this past weekend. Price was admitted in critical condition with an undisclosed, non-contagious illness to Hartford Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The women's basketball team will officially get the 2004-05 season underway with its annual ‘Super Show' on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Gampel Pavilion. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. (ET).

Geno Auriemma & Diana Taurasi

For the first time in five years, Coach Geno Auriemma will be starting a campaign without Women's College Player of the Year Diana Taurasi. Taurasi just completed her first WNBA season as the league's Rookie of the Year as well as winning a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
