It's tough to keep the slippery 6-foot-1, 165-pounder's talents under wraps, and this spring and summer many more will catch a glimpse of the Rice High School product with the New York Gauchos.
"(This) weekend we're going to Boo Williams," said Edgar Sosa told the Insiders Report on Thursday. "Followed by Las Vegas the next weekend, followed by Dallas the next weekend. This summer we'll be in Las Vegas (for The Main Event) and at the Peach Jam. I'm also going to the Nike Camp (in Indianapolis)."
While Rice suffered a frustratingly early exit in the CHSAA playoffs, Sosa succeeded in impressing colleges coaches to the point where he has gone from a prospect on the high major bubble to one who is now firmly ensconced on the lists of major conference programs. He is now regarded as one of the top point men in the class of 2006, and the exuberant guard is not hurting for attention from college coaches.
"Right now, Miami, Louisville, NC State, UConn, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall and Florida State (are recruiting me)," said Sosa. "Louisville, NC State, Seton Hall, and Florida State have offered."
When pressed, three schools have an edge at this stage of the game.
"If I had to make a decision right now," said Sosa. "It would be between Miami, Florida State, and Louisville."
It looks at if Sosa will have plenty of options looking toward the next level. A couple of things appeal to him as he investigates college programs.
"I'm just looking for a program that gets up and down," said Sosa. "A program that plays fundamental basketball, and will give me an opportunity to play as a freshman."
The native of Inwood, in the upper reaches of Manhattan, has been tweaking his game and trying to better himself in a couple of different areas.
"I've just been working on my mid-range game," said Sosa. "And my upper body strength."
Sosa will have to spend a good deal of time in the college weight room, but it is the guard's superior feel, elusiveness, and confidence that have coaches in pursuit. Sosa scored 22 points, including four three-pointers, for the Bronx team in a 97-91 loss to Brooklyn on Tuesday night at the Wheelchair Classic at Christ the King High School. The shifty point man can shoot it off the dribble and is extremely dangerous off the break, where he can use his creativity to befuddle defenders. Physically, he still has some work to do, but his innate feel for the game make Edgar one of the more attractive point guard targets in the class of 2006.
