Under the watchful eye of college coaches such as Connecticut's Jim Calhoun, Hawes put on a virtuoso performance, staking FOH to a 70-57 lead midway through the second half. Simply put, the Blue Devils had no defensive answer for Hawes, who dominated at will in the paint.
Haley got the ball rolling for D.C. by attacking the basket and drawing contact to fuel an 8-0 run. On successive possessions, he earned trips to the charity stripe and canned four of four free throws. He followed up by scoring on a short jumper off the glass and a stickback on the offensive glass to trim the deficit to 74-68 with 5:07 remaining.
With 4:43, hard charging point guard Tywon Lawson drove the lane and was fouled, putting D.C. in the bonus. That would prove important later when the Blue Devils took the lead.
A 10-3 run, which began with an Allmond three pointer and ended with one by reserve guard Marcus Ashton, gave D.C. a 78-77 lead with under three minutes to play.
It appeared the FOH had restored calm a few moments later, as Hawes and swingman Ryan Anderson each hit a pair of free throws to put the Blue Devils down 81-78 with 2:02 remaining.
D.C. responded with a 7-0 run and took control of the game for good thanks to the backcourt. Dyson found Allmond all alone for a three pointer to deadlock the game at 81, then Lawson converted four of four free throws on consecutive Blue Devil possessions to establish an 85-81 edge with 11.5 seconds left.
Anderson tried to knock down a three-pointer to close the deficit, and with 1.2 seconds left, the FOH swingman was fouled hoisting a trey from the corner. He hit the first two shots, and attempted to miss the third and hope for a rebound and quick score. However, Anderson airballed the last attempt, effectively giving the possession and game away to D.C.
Lawson, who committed to North Carolina in the spring, led the Blue Devils with 29 points. Dyson and Haley added 14 apiece, while Allmond netted 10.
Renardo Parker was the only other FOH player (aside from Hawes) to hit for double figures. He finished with a double-double, collecting 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
