Barry Church Names Favorites

Penn Hills High School safety Barry Church has all the tools...the size...the speed...the instincts...and the ability. It just seems that the colleges are finally realizing that the Pittsburgh native has quickly put it together. A holder of many mid-major offers already the safety informed us that his list indeed has taken a major change in the past month.

Six weeks into the season and Barry Church is all business on the football field. He recently took the time to let us know how things were going with his recruitment. "So far this season I've got four picks (interceptions) and 40 tackles I think. We're 5-1 so far so we're doing pretty good."

A month ago Church's list consisted of seven schools but recently things have picked up drastically for the outstanding safety. "My list of schools are Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Connecticut, Maryland, Louisville, North Carolina State, and Iowa. I've got offers from all of the MAC schools I mentioned.

With a number of new schools on his list Church informed us that he in fact was about to make a phone call to set up his first official visit. "Yeah, after I finish talking with you I'm going to talk with N.C. State about setting up a visit with them. I'll probably make officials to West Virginia, Iowa, Maryland, and probably Toledo too."

As he named the schools he plans to visit officially we also queried the Penn Hills star if he had made an unofficial visits thus far in his recruitment. I've been West Virginia, Eastern Michigan, Maryland, and Toledo unofficially so far."

As for Connecticut, Barry stated, "Coach Orlando is recruiting me for UConn. I like their program a lot and everything. I also like their facilities."

Lately, however, Church says he has not heard as much from the Huskies as he has from other programs. It may be that the Connecticut staff has cooled on Church, although it is still a good sign that he continues to list the Huskies among his preferred schools.

As of late, Church says, "West Virginia, Iowa, and NC State have been recruiting me the hardest...if I had to name a favorite at this point it'ss between West Virginia and NC State."

Most schools are recruiting Church at his natural safety position but he informed us that, “Some schools that use a 4-4 defense are thinking about me being an outside backer.” Asked what skills make him a highly coveted safety he responded, “My ability to tackle, my coverage ability, and my size and speed are my strengths.

I look at guys like Ed Reed and Roy Williams on Sundays to see what I can learn to improve my game. As far as college players I watch the free safety from Florida State a good bit too.

Barry Church says, “I’ll probably be able to finalize my list of schools by the first of November sometime.” Will the Huskies make the cut? Given the current scenario the staff will have to make up serious ground up as West Virginia and North Carolina State stand out the most currently to the talented safety.
