Lawrence Wilson; Thrilled to be a Husky

UConn dipped into Alabama this year and signed a prize recruit in Lawrence Wilson. He was a prospect who was not generating a ton of interest early on in the process, but as soon as he started to shine, Coach Edsall and the Husky staff was in a great position to take control of his recruitment.

Lawrence Wilson a 6-foot-1, 205 pound, linebacker from Alma Bryant HS in Irvington, Ala., was thrilled to finally get the chance to sign his letter of intent with the Huskies.

"I had a pretty good day," Wilson said. "It was a relief to finally sign. I bet I will sleep really good tonight. I had a press conference (Wednesday) at my school, and signed my letter in front of my classmates."

"I felt really good when UConn offered me. They offered around Christmas and that was a great time to get the offer. It all fell in to place, because I had some family there. My aunts, uncles and grandmother are all excited to have me come up there and play. I will have a good fan base!"

The two-star prospect is now ready to concentrate on getting himself ready to face the challenge of the college game and he wants to be in top shape when he arrives on campus.

"I am just anxious to get in the weight room. I want to start putting on some weight and get myself ready to come in and help the team. I am just anxious to get on campus and start up with camp. I cannot wait!"

Wilson could have potentially wound up at the safety position, but he is being brought in at the position that he feels most comfortable.

"I will be coming in to play outside linebacker. That is where I played for most of my career. I would like to make myself into a Demeco Ryans-type of player. I am a pretty good pass rusher, so I would consider that the strongest part of my game."

Wilson formed a special bond with Coach Richardson throughout the recruiting process, and that relationship was another huge factor that helped the Huskies reel in Wilson over offers from schools like Memphis and UAB.

"Coach Richardson was a really cool young coach. He stuck with me throughout the whole process and let me know that UConn was the place for me. He was real honest and he was the type of coach that would let you know what you need to work on to become a better player."

As a senior, Wilson racked up some impressive defensive statistics. "I had a strong year. I finished the season with 130 tackles, four interceptions and eight sacks."
