UNLV Basketball Recruiting Notes - July 2001

With the arrival of the Spoonhour era comes a new version of recruiting methods and targets. Or so we thought. During the Bayno era, the athletic small forwards were clearly placed as the highest priority, even higher than point guard (the most vital position on the floor in college basketball). Perhaps he believed the 'run and gun' offense needed these types of athletes in order to thrive? Did Bayno's offenses ever thrive? That's another story all together.

With the arrival of the Spoonhour era comes a new version of recruiting methods and targets. Or so we thought. Perhaps he believed the 'run and gun' offense needed these types of athletes in order to thrive? Did Bayno's offenses ever thrive? That's another story all together. But in his short time at UNLV, coach Charlie Spoonhour appears to have very similar recruiting targets for his Rebel teams. Though Spoon's recruiting might be similar, I think we all have hopes that his coaching style and offensive sets are not.

Out of eight current recruits that RebelReport.com has knowledge of, one is a point guard, two are power forwards/centers, and five are in the range of 6'4" to 6'6" small forward/shooting guards type of players. Out of the eights recruits, one from Kentucky, one from Washington, one from Arizona, one from Oregon, one from Las Vegas, and three from California. Out of the eight recruits, two are JC players.

The players that we have lost so far is Dixie JC 6'8" PF Jaime Lloreda. Seth Scott, a 6'10" center out of Utah Valley State JC and one of the two PF/C listed above is "rumored" to have committed to Illinois.

The quality of the recruits listed above have far exceeded many fans expectation for Spoon's first full year to recruit. We just did not expect this many high quality recruits to look at UNLV and brand new coach Spoonhour this early of the year. We all know what Antwain Barbour has done for Wabbash CC (won the NJCAA championship). With former Wabbash coach, Jay Spoonhour, joining the Rebels' coaching staff the fans are salivating at the prospect of UNLV landing the #1 JUCO player once again. If Antwain commits, he will join players such as Larry Johnson, David Butler, J.R. Rider and Shawn Marion as the consensus #1 JC's who have committed to the Scarlet-and-Gray. The other recruits are also ranked very high nationally. Out of the six high school seniors-to-be, five are ranked in the top 100 nationally. One have the chance to be ranked as high as the top 20 once it is said and done.
