Could there be better news for UNLV fans, boosters, and student/athletes? Today, UNLV announced that John Robinson will take over as Athletic Director at UNLV starting January 1st, 2002. He will replace the controversial AD Charlie Cavagnero, who will act as an assistant to school president Carol Harter until his contract expires in July of 2002.
Robinson becomes only the second person in the nation to serve as both coach and athletic director at the same time. Robinson will enter the 2001-2002 season as college football's ninth-winningest active coach with a record of 115-48-4. He took over the UNLV football program that went winless in 1999 and has posted a two-year record of 11-13, including an 8-5 mark last season including the dismantling of Arkansas in the Las Vegas Bowl 31-14.
This is a much needed move for UNLV and should have an immediate impact on the university and the community. Robinson, loved by Las Vegans for his likeable personality and success as the head football coach seems like a perfect fit for this vital position. He brings instant respect and credibility to the athletic department. Robinson will earn an additional $450,000 a year in 2002 for his additional responsibilities.
