What a time to be a Rebel football coach, player, fan and recruit! Today (Tuesday, September 13th, 2016) UNLV announced that the Fertitta Family, long time champions of the Las Vegas community and UNLV, has gifted the football program $10 million dollars for the Fertitta Football Complex, the future home for UNLV football. The Fertitta Football Complex will not only but the Rebels into the 21st century in terms of training facility, but also allow the Rebels staff to recruit the best talent not only in Las Vegas, but also around the entire country. The new football facility will offer UNLV players a state-of-the-art headquarters to prepare for success on the field as well as in the classroom. It will also be a huge plus for the Rebels as UNLV attempts to join a Power-5 Conference in the upcoming years.
The Fertitta Football Complex will be built centrally on campus, on the edge of Rebel Park. For the first time in the Rebels programs history, players will have unrestricted access to the tools needed to improve athletically and academically while the coaching staff will have a very key recruiting tool to show the recruits that the Rebels are serious about winning on the field as well as off of it. The Rebels will train, study, eat, learn and grow as players on and of the field in the Fertitta Football Complex which is due to break ground in spring of 2017.
UNLV Head Coach Tony Sanchez said "We are blessed to live in this world-class city and be able to offer young people an opportunity to attend one of the nation's emerging universities set in one of the most exciting communities in the nation. Las Vegas and UNLV have so many built-in advantages, but the one thing we are behind in when attracting future Rebels is a football facility such as this -- not just among the nation's elite programs but also in our very own conference. With so much at stake in the world of college athletics, this new building is vital to our future success as a program, an athletics department, and a University."
UNLV President Len Jessup added "Athletics are a critical part of the university experience and the window through which many see and form opinions about us. As we implement our strategy to become a top tier public university in research, teaching and community impact, the same commitment must be made to Athletics for our teams to be competitive now and in the future. Tony (Sanchez) has brought a new vision and level of energy for UNLV football. His coaching staff and players deserve facilities that will allow the program to grow and succeed."
UNLV Athletic Director Tina Kunzer-Murphey said "This new facility is the key part of UNLV's plan to not only field a perennially successful football program, but also place our University in the best possible position for any potential changes to the collegiate athletics landscape in the coming years. Coach Sanchez and his staff will take care of the on-the-field growth -- our task is to provide him with the tools needed to thrust Rebel Football to the next level for the long-haul both athletically and academically. This building is paramount to that happening."
