The last time UNLV won a game, it was January 24th. After suffering a brutal 9 game losing streak since that day, the Rebels finally earned themselves a win 66-59. It was Senior Night at the T&M and it was because of UNLV's seniors that they got that elusive, "W." Tyrell Green was lights out from the floor. He scored 19 points (6-9 overall, 3-5 from distance and 4-5 from the line) and brought down 12 rebounds. Christian Jones also put an exclamation point on his final regular season game in Las Vegas. Jones also a double-double as well by going for 16 points and 12 boards. Uche Ofoegbu joined in on the festivities by scoring 11 points.
The story of the game was UNLV's resiliency at getting into the paint. The Rebels scored over 30 points inside and really beat the visiting Aggies up down low. UNLV also upped its defensive intensity significantly in the 2nd half. They held Utah State without a field goal for the final 8:13.
Jovan Mooring deserves a shout out as well. The junior point guard has been the catalyst for this team and its unquestioned best player. Over and over during the losing streak Mooring did his very best to will this struggling team to victory. He came up short on a lot of those occasions, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Tonight, it paid off. "Jojo" struggled a bit shooting the ball, but he was sacrificing his body by taking charges and hitting the deck for loose balls. His hustle and courage was what makes him the leader for this group, but his game clinching three was certainly the icing on the cake and a tremendous feel good moment.
UNLV wraps up the regular season with a road trip to Fresno and then they'll play in the first day of the MWC tournament next week. For now they sit at 11-19 overall and tied for last place in the conference at 4-13. If they play like they did tonight, they have a chance to win at least another game, or two and finish this tough season on a relative high note.
