DL J.J. Fifita talks about UNLV

Birmingham High School is a top-notch football program in the L.A. area. It is may also be turning into quite the football pipeline to UNLV. We already introduced you to stud two-way player Will Chandler from Birmingham when he committed to play for the Rebels last week. This week we are introducing you to another Birmingham the Rebels have set their sights on: Defensive Tackle J.J. Fifita.

This 6-2 270 athlete received many pre-season accolades but double-teaming from the teams on a very tough football schedule led to a sub-par season statistically. Did the attention given him by opposing offensive lines account for a drop off in recruiting attention?

"No, not really. I had offers still from San Diego State and Colorado State. I had other schools call but most people thought I was going to SDSU because my brother is a redshirt freshman defensive end there."

Why is J.J. not an Aztec commitment today?

"I guess I waited too long to commit. I kind of wanted to see what other options were there for me before I made a really quick decision. The SDSU coaches decided they weren't gonna wait, I guess. They filled all their D-Line spots."

Does having one of his Birmingham teammates coming to UNLV help Fifita in his decision to come to UNLV?

"Absolutely, Will and I are real good friends. We also talk about how great it would be to go to college together."

How important is this trip to UNLV for J.J. Fifita?

"It is very important. If I like my trip to UNLV and they offer me a scholarship, I will likely accept it on the spot. I really want to be a Rebel."
