Jackpot! Rebels ink Horton

Mike Sanford's third recruiting class at UNLV was highlighted by today's surprising news that safety Shane Horton (6-2, 200) of Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, Calif., a three-star recruit by Scout.com who was regarded one of the top 50 prospects in southern California heading into his senior year, picked UNLV over Washington and Oregon.

"A big get for us," UNLV coach Mike Sanford said. "He's an excellent athlete who played wide receiver, quarterback and defensive back. He's a tremendous player on tape who was very highly recruited."

Sanford also was very high on defensive back Will Chandler of Los Angeles City power Birmingham High in Mission Hills, Calif., who selected the Rebels over Nevada.

"He's just an outstanding athlete," Sanford said. "He can do a lot of things. I think he's a tremendous player. He can make things happen with the ball in his hands."

The key to the class, however, are five highly-touted mid-year enrollees that will take part in spraing practice which begins on March 19.

Running back Frank Summers (5-11, 235) of Laney College in Oakland fills a huge void for a short yardage and power back and could by used much the same way Quinton Ganther was by Sanford at Utah.

Defensive end Thor Pili originally attended Oregon is will be a key piece in UNLV's switch to a 4-3 defense.

Two true freshmen, corner Nehemiah Mundy of Culver City, Calif., and Rico Thomas of Oakland, Calif., McClymonds, along with junior college DB Geoff Howard figure to help shore up the secondary.
