Shane Horton wins starting job

True freshman Shane Horton is listed as the starter at safety on UNLV's two-deep released this weekend. But Horton had to sit out Saturday night's Mock Game with an injury. Will he be back to start the opener at Utah State on Thursday night?

Horton had an infection in his calf lanced on Friday and the leg was bandaged up for Saturday's walk-thru at Sam Boyd Stadium. However, he is expected back on the field for Sunday night's key workout.

Senior Aaron Straiten was listed as the starter at the X wide receiver spot despite a strong fall camp push from junior Gerold Rodriguez. True freshman Quinton Pointer won one starting corner spot while junior Geoffery Howard and senior Mil'Von James are listed as co-starters on the other side.

Horton and sophomore Daryl Forte are listed as the starting safeties.

Senior Elton Shackelford, who spent most of the camp at tackle before JC transfer Luke Plante injured his knee, is listed as a starting defensive end with Jeremy Geathers while redshirt freshman Malu Taumua and junior Jacob Hales are the starters at tackle.

The starting offensive line finds junior Richie Plunkett at left tackle, senior Tim Goins at left guard, sophomore Joe Hawley at center, senior Mike McKiski at right guard and junior Johan Asiata at right tackle. As expected, junior Frank "The Tank" Summers will start at tailback with junior David Peeples and sophomore Chris Brogdon listed even as his backup. Summers, by the way, decided to change his number this week from 34 to 4.
