Junior to Watch: ATH Brandon Siler

Brandon Siler, out of Evans High School in Orlando (FL), is one of the sunshine state's top prospects. Capable of playing a number of positions at the next level, the super athlete talks about his early favorites and specifically where the Trojans fit in.

WeAreSC- What schools are you looking at right now?

Siler- "Definitely USC, USC's on the top of the list.  Miami, the other USC, South Carolina, there's a lot of them…Florida State, Georgia Tech, a lot of them.  We haven't been through the recruiting process yet so…"

WeAreSC- So as far as your leaders go, USC is up there?

Siler- "Yeah, USC is definitely in the top 3.  The other two would probably be Miami and I'd say Georgia Tech."

WeAreSC- Do you have any offers?

Siler- "Nobody has really offered me a scholarship because they're not allowed to come up and talk to me yet.  Through the mail they've offered.  Stanford, USC, University of South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and… I can't think of them all."

WeAreSC- As you go through the process, what are going to be the factors that you'll look at in choosing a school?

Siler- "What they want me to play, what I feel comfortable playing at, and when I'm going to play.  If I have to sit out because it would make me better then I would sit out.  I want to see who's in front of me going into next year.  Would I play next year after my redshirt year, or would I not redshirt, or whatever.  I want to see who's playing my position and what position I'd be playing."

WeAreSC- I notice that you list a few schools that are farther from home than some others.  Is distance from home a factor in your decision?

Siler- "No, it's not a factor.  I'll feel at home where ever I go."

WeAreSC- I know you also have a pretty impressive GPA.  What kind of role will academics play and do you have any idea about what you want to major in?

Siler- "Yeah, I want to finish and get my education because I have a gift that a lot of athletes don't have.  I can do it in the class room too so I definitely want to separate myself by finishing college.  I want to major in some type of business.  I just don't know what kind."

WeAreSC- You brought up the issue of what position you might play.  Where do you play at right now?

Siler- "I played middle linebacker and tight end last year.  This year I'll be playing tailback and wide receiver too."

WeAreSC- Where are most of the schools recruiting you to play at?

Siler- "There's a lot of them that are recruiting me just as an athlete because I have played a lot of positions.  I've played tight end, linebacker…inside and out, and now I'm going to be playing running back and receiver, so it's kind of hard to recruit me at a position.  I play pretty much where ever the team needs me to play."

WeAreSC- Do you have a preference of where you might play?

Siler- "No, I don't really have a preference.  I think I'd make a good receiver.  I have to see what I run the 40 in at the Nike Camp."

WeAreSC- What is it that has you looking at USC?

Siler- "I watched them play a couple times.  I think they're like me, kind of sneaky.  They bust you up.  You don't think much of them and they come up on you.  And I saw they produced the Heisman winner this year and they've won a lot of games.  I kind of jumped on USC's bandwagon.  I want to check things out there."

WeAreSC- You also mentioned Miami and Georgia Tech, what do you like about each of those schools?

Siler- "Miami, they kind of talked to me early.  I'm in Florida so I had a choice between the three big schools growing up.  I liked Florida State when I was a real little kid and then it was Miami, so I've been a fan since then.  They're trying to build a dynasty so I'd love to be a part of that type of thing.  Georgia Tech, their coach has shown me a lot.  I get a lot of mail and when you open mail and you get one of those letters where you know everyone else got the same letter, I hate that kind of letter.  The Georgia Tech coach, every time he writes me he knows something personal about me, you know ‘how's your mom, how's this and that.'  Every time he's written me he says I'm on top of the recruiting list and everything."

WeAreSC- Do you have any of your stats from last year?

Siler- "No, I'm not real big on that kind of stuff."

WeAreSC- Do you play any other sports?

Siler- "Yeah, I play basketball.  I play power forward, the 3 and the 4.  I made 2nd team All-Central Florida.  I'm running track now.  I run the 4X100."

WeAreSC- What's your current height and weight?

Siler- "6'3 ½ and 215."

WeAreSC- What's your best 40 time?

Siler- "I've never run it yet.  I've raced people in it but I've never been timed.  This weekend will be my first time, the Nike Camp in Gainsville."

WeAreSC- Do you have a max on your bench and squat?

Siler- "I haven't done it in a long time because I'm just coming back from basketball.  It's probably like 305 right now.  My best is 335.  I've never maxed out on squat."

WeAreSC- What are your plans for the summer?  Are you going out to any more camps after this weekend?

Siler- "No, the Nike camp is free so that's the only one I'm planning on."

WeAreSC- Do you plan on committing early or would you rather take your trips and go through the process?

Siler- "Yeah, I want to weigh my options.  I want to see what everybody has to offer and what the environment is like because if I commit early, there's no telling what I missed out on.  I want to make sure I find the right place."

WeAreSC- Do you think you'll be taking one of those visits to USC?

Siler- "Yeah, as long as they like me as much as I like them that will definitely be one of my visits."
