USC freshman wide receiver Kyle Prater suffered a foot fracture while taking part in offseason workouts, the school announced on Friday.

The injury could require surgery and Prater will be sidelined for 6-8 weeks, which will force him to miss at least a portion of spring practice.

Prater was rated as Scout.com's No.2 wide receiver in the 2010 recruiting class but was forced to redshirt last season due to a series of nagging injuries.

The 6-5, 215-pound receiver is considered one of the top young players on the offensive side of the ball and is expected to compete for a starting spot this coming season.
