Notables on the 2011 Recruiting Class

Not all Trojans are alike, but this new class isn't that different from one another, either.

USC's incoming class was ranked 5th nationally with 30 commits this Fall. While all come from different backgrounds and their stories vary, there remain a surprising number of similarities among this new group.

Off-the-field Prodigies

Anthony Sarao and Amir Carlisle both earned over 4.0 GPAs in high school. Both expect their commitment to learning to benefit them when studying their playbooks.

Which leads us to our next recruit similarity…

Cardinal and Gold>Cardinal

Both Sarao and Carlisle decommitted from Stanford after Jim Harbaugh's departure to the NFL.

Speaking of Cardinals, the state of Arizona has brought a few commits to USC

Cornerback Isiah Wiley comes from Arizona Western Community College in Yuma, in the southwest part of the state. Heading east, offensive lineman Cyrus Hobbi and long snapper Peter McBride call Scottsdale home, although they went to different high schools.

USC's Top Recruit: The New Woods?

Heisman hopeful and leading receiver Robert Woods went to the same high school as the Trojan's top recruit George Farmer (also a wide-receiver). Both hail from Junipero Serra High out of Gardena, Calif. Another 2011 commit from Serra is safety Marqise Lee.

Which brings up another similarity: Who Else Played Together?

Probably little surprise that the Trojans grabbed two commits out of USC-feeder Mater Dei (alum of Matt Barkley, Khaled Holmes, etc.), as hyped quarterback Max Wittek enrolled this past Spring and receiver Victor Blackwell plans to enroll in Fall.

Another common high school aligned with the Trojans is the Moreno Valley's Rancho Verde High, where former USC tackle and newly drafted Dallas Cowboy Tyron Smith went. New commits Ryan Henderson, a cornerback, and Junior Pomee, a tight end, are both Mustangs.

Speaking of Pomee…

The Polynesian-Trojan Tradition Continues

Pomee joins a list of famed Polynesian Trojans, including Cincinnati linebacker Rey Maualuga, Philadelphia Eagles fullback Stanley Havili and current USC Trojans: defensive tackle Christian Tupou, center Abe Markowitz, linebacker Simione Vehikite and fullback Soma Vainuku.

We covered the South-Pacific, what about the South?

A few Trojan defensive backs have southern roots, like Nickell Robey (Florida), Anthony Brown (Mississippi), T.J. Bryant (Florida) and Jawanza Starling (Florida), a new defensive commit joins the party. Inside linebacker Lamar Dawson is from Danville, Kentucky.

From the same school in Tallahassee, Florida as Starling and Bryant hails new runningback commit Javorious Allen.

On special teams, punter Kris Albarado comes from Lousiana.

Passion for the Stage

Although USC historically shares the national football stage with schools like Florida, Ohio State, Michigan and Alabama, a different stage has lured a couple of USC recruits. Part of the reason commits Cyrus Hobbi and Amir Carlisle came to Trojanland was because of its proximity to Hollywood. Both have stated they plan to be theater majors at USC, and like the reputation of USC's School of Cinematic Arts.
