DL Brigham Harwell talks recruiting

Los Altos High School's Brigham Harwell is one of the most highly touted defensive linemen in the state for the class of 2004. The 6'2, 250 pound speed rusher is coming off of an impressive junior season that saw him pick up Division VI defensive player of the year honors in leading his team to a CIF title. Are the Trojans in the mix for this defensive stand-out?

WeAreSC- What schools are you looking at right now?

Harwell- "Right now, I'm looking at UCLA, Arizona, Florida State, Penn State, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington."

WeAreSC- Any leaders out of that group?

Harwell- "UCLA."

WeAreSC- Do you have any offers?

Harwell- "I have offers from UCLA, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, Kansas State…I have six offers."

WeAreSC- Have you talked to any coaches since the May evaluation period started?

Harwell- "Yeah, USC called me, Pete Carroll and Ed Orgeron. Washington called me and Oregon called."

WeAreSC- What are the factors that you're going to look at in choosing a school?

Harwell- "The most important factor is the coaching staff. That's the most important thing."

WeAreSC- Will distance from home or early playing time factor in?

Harwell- "Oh no, I'll play in any weather or any place. The most important thing is just how I connect with the coaches and how are the coaches and stuff like that."

WeAreSC- Are all of the schools recruiting you to play at defensive end?

Harwell- "Not all of the schools. USC is recruiting me to play as a defensive tackle, but every other school is for defensive end/linebacker."

WeAreSC- Do you have a preference of where you play at?

Harwell- "I'm hoping to be a linebacker but I'm used to defensive end, so I'm hoping to be at defensive end also."

WeAreSC- I've read in previous interviews where you had USC listed among your favorites. Are you no longer looking at them and any specific reason why?

Harwell- "USC, I didn't say them on my list, but I'm not counting them out. I really don't know what took them off my list. They're a great school and Coach Orgeron, the lineman coach, I think he's the best coach in all of college football. I don't know. I can't really answer that question right now."

WeAreSC- What did Coach Carroll and Coach Orgeron talk to you about in your latest conversation?

Harwell- "Recently they said ‘don't count us out,' and ‘you're one of the top linemen on our list,' and ‘don't count us out,' and ‘hang in there,' and stuff like that. I like them a lot because Coach Orgeron, like I said, he's the best coach in college football and I would love to play for him, and to play for him would be an honor."

WeAreSC- How did the one day camp at USC go?

Harwell- "I loved it. I think I was ranked the number one lineman there and I had a great time. I learned a lot from Coach Orgeron and I had a great time."

WeAreSC- Do you know any of the players up at USC?

Harwell- "Yeah, I played with Shaun Cody my freshman year of high school. I know him real well."

WeAreSC- Did you make it out to any Junior Day's this spring?

Harwell- "Yeah, I went to the Junior Day at USC. UCLA, they've always been my first choice, but I went to SC for the Junior Day and I had second thoughts because all of the coaches are hyped up and it's just a great atmosphere at USC. UCLA's still my top choice, but it made me think about it more."

WeAreSC- Would an offer from USC have an impact?

Harwell- "If they offer me, of course I'll think about it more, but UCLA's still my favorite."

WeAreSC- You were one of the standouts at the Nike Camp. Talk about that experience. What was it like going up against some other top players?

Harwell- "It was a great experience. I got to go one-on-one against the top players in division I, and division II, and our division. I wish we did more because time was running out, but it was great just to go up against better guys. My division, division VI, there's some pretty good linemen, but going to the camp, it's the best of the best. I think I was number one there too. I learned a lot at that camp too and it was nice going there."

WeAreSC- What do you think your strengths are as a defensive end?

Harwell- "Every down I look forward to sacking the quarterback. I don't care if it's a run or a pass. Every down is a pass for me. As a sophomore I had 22 sacks and as a junior I had 24. I just focus on sacking the quarterback. If I don't sack the quarterback I look to make a tackle on the run. My weakness, it's on the run. I'm not that good versus the run, but versus the passer I think I'm excellent. Versus the run, I'm working on it and seeing if next year I can get a little better at it."

WeAreSC- Do you play any other sports?

Harwell- "I ran track and played basketball, but I stopped basketball so I wouldn't get any injuries. I run the 100m and the 200m in track."

WeAreSC- What are your best times in track?

Harwell- "My best time was this year at Citrus College. In the 100 I got an 11.3."

WeAreSC- Do you have a max on bench and squat?

Harwell- "Last Friday I maxed out at 345 on bench, and on squat I haven't maxed out yet."

WeAreSC- What are your plans for the summer? Any more camps?

Harwell- "I was signed up for the UCLA camp but my lineman coach in high school told me to lay off this summer because I already have six offers on the table, why risk anything. He said to just work out, train on your own, he'll train with me in the summer, but I don't have anything planned."

WeAreSC- Do you plan on committing early now that you have some offers, or do you plan on going through the process and taking your trips?

Harwell- "I plan on taking my trips. I assumed I was going to commit to UCLA. I was going to verbal on my birthday in September, but I was talking to my brother and he told me to wait it out and see what happens."
