Extra Points: Takeaways from Saturday

Some extra observations, sights and notes after Saturday's practice at Howard Jones Field.

First, because tight end Rhett Ellison received stitches on his thumb Saturday after injuring it in a punting drill, walk-on tight end Michael Cox had a few solid catches during practice. The 6-4 redshirt freshman is from Bainbridge Island, Wash.

Second, another tight end who was standing out is Randall Telfer. Telfer grabbed two big passes from Matt Barkley up the seam, combining for a total of 60 yards.

Third, the interceptions of today were Drew McAllister, off a tipped ball from Xavier Grimble who couldn't make the catch, and Nickell Robey off a Matt Barkley pass.

Fourth, an NFL scout from the Buffalo Bills attended practice Saturday. Another from the Pittsburgh Steelers was at Friday's session.

Fifth, the defense in general is giving these new quarterbacks some challenges. In one series where Cody Kessler was under center, there were two back-to-back deflections by cornerback Anthony Brown (intended for Kyle Prater) and linebacker Marquis Simmons. With Wittek, cornerback Tony Burnett deflected a pass (intended for Brice Butler) and then on another play, the defensive line "sacked" the Mater Dei product.
