Some extra observations, sights and notes after Sunday's second preseason game at The Coliseum.
First, running back Curtis McNeal
said he is fine after injuring his right knee on the fourth play of the Trojans' scrimmage Sunday. Initially he was worried, but said he feels as though he'll be ready to play in Tuesday's practice.
Second, freshman and fullback-turned-defensive end Charles Burks recorded three sacks in the Trojans' scrimmage yesterday. While he was running with the third string, and thus an inexperienced opposing offensive line, it's notable considering his recent move at the college level. Burks played the position in high school.
Third, it was a day of dropped balls for USC's receiving core. De'Von Flournoy most noticeably struggled, but Marqise Lee, Kyle Prater and Amir Carlisle also dropped a couple passes.
Four, there were two interceptions in the day, one going to safety Drew McAllister and the other to cornerback Torin Harris, who has been struggling through injury this Fall Camp.
Fifth, Dillon Baxter is finally looking the part of that elusive tailback he was so hyped at last season. While he had flashes last fall as well, Baxter's mind seems to be in a much better place than it was in 2010. If mind and body can come together, it looks like he can have a great season in 2011.
