Extra Points: Takeaways from Tuesday

A few observations, notes and quotes from the Trojans' Tuesday practice at Howard Jones Field.

First, it seems as though the surefire starters on kick and punt returns will be one or some combination of the following: Curtis McNeal, Robert Woods, Brandon Carswell, Nickell Robey, Robbie Boyer and Marqise Lee. The six have been the main ones taking these reps throughout all of fall camp. Robey and Woods have seemed to be the most consistent of the six.

Second, in back-to-back plays the defense intercepted the scout team quarterback Tuesday. In this drill, Chris Galippo, Hayes Pullard and Dion Bailey started at linebacker.

Third, more than halfway through the Trojans' practice, Robert Woods had put the yellow no-contact jersey on. Kiffin did not divulge the reason, but it is presumably so he is in tip-top shape for Saturday.

Fourth, linebacker Anthony Sarao looks like he's put on quite a bit of weight since his time at USC. I will confirm with him this week how much he has put on, but it seems considerable.

Fifth, Dion Bailey showed on a variety of plays Tuesday why he will be a starter this season. On one play, Bailey flashed his solid vision by intercepting a ball that was behind him-- the redshirt freshman had to turn his upper body completely around. If he can withstand the pressure the Coliseum and collegiate football bring, he could be something special.
