Q&A with WR recruit Lavelle Hawkins

One of last weekend's top performers at the Nor Cal Nike Camp was Stockton Edison's Lavelle Hawkins. The big time receiver is coming off a junior season that saw him pick up 980 yards and 14 touchdowns on 53 catches. Here's the latest on his recruitment and his plans for the summer.

WeAreSC- Talk about the Nike Camp at Stanford last weekend. What was that experience like?

Hawkins- "It was cool. I've been going to it for three years, so it's like another practice to me, but with just the best athletes."

WeAreSC- You had a pretty impressive showing in the one-on-one's. What was it like going up against some of those highly touted DB's?

Hawkins- "To me they weren't top DB's. I'm supposed to be going to Miami for their camp and they say that those guys are the real deal. So that's why I'm going to go, to find out. I'm supposed to leave for that on June 20th."

WeAreSC- Were there any other recruits that you met at the camp?

Hawkins- "Yeah, [Chris] Childs, I remember him from the USC camp. And the guy from De La Salle, [Cameron] Colvin. They were pretty cool. And the Williams brothers, I saw them too. We all talked."

WeAreSC- Do you have any of your numbers from the camp?

Hawkins- "My forty time was a 4.41. I didn't do the shuttle. They gave me 5'11 and put me at 165 pounds."

WeAreSC- What schools are you looking at right now?

Hawkins- "I like Tennessee, USC, Washington…I mean, really I can tell you what schools I like because of the name, but I really don't know too much about them. So it's going to be nice to take the trips so I can tell you everything about them."

WeAreSC- Who has offered you so far?

Hawkins- "Cal and San Diego State."

WeAreSC- Do you have a leader out of the schools that you're looking at?

Hawkins- "I don't really have a favorite. I kind of like the schools down south, but it's wide open. I don't know anything about what it's like down there. I'm mostly going by the big names. I want to go somewhere big and where I can shine."

WeAreSC- You brought up the fact that you'd like to go to a big name school. What are some other things that you're looking for in the school you choose?

Hawkins- "First of all, I'm looking at education. That and where I can play as soon as possible. And just the environment. Like, am I going to be able to live here for four years and get along with these people?"

WeAreSC- You mentioned the southern schools. Is distance from home any kind of factor at all?

Hawkins- "No, it's not a factor."

WeAreSC- Who has contacted you since the May evaluation period started? Have you been getting a lot of calls?

Hawkins- "Really they've been calling my coaches, Michigan, Tennessee, Miami, Washington, Arizona, a lot of schools. SC came by the school. A lot of them did. SC, Oregon, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Cal, Michigan, Tennessee is supposed to come by on the 26th, Washington, Utah, Utah State, and Arizona."

WeAreSC- You came down for the one-day camp at USC a few weeks back. How did that go?

Hawkins- "It was cool. I didn't really get to show off like I was supposed to. I wasn't myself that day. I thought I did pretty bad that day. That's why I thought SC didn't like me, because they didn't write me a letter for a long time, but they came by the school, so…But yeah, I had a tough day so I thought, ‘I really have to have a good day when I go to Stanford.'"

WeAreSC- What has you looking at USC right now?

Hawkins- "It's close to home and that's a big thing. And you know, Frank Strong and Chris Cash went there. They're from Stockton and they succeeded there. They lived down the street from me. They played football with my brother."

WeAreSC- As a receiver, what do you think your strengths are?

Hawkins- "My hands and my route running."

WeAreSC- Do you play any defense?

Hawkins- "Yeah, I play corner and safety."

WeAreSC- Are you getting any recruiting attention for the defensive side of the ball?

Hawkins- "Some schools have said that I could play corner, but it doesn't really matter as long as I get on the field."

WeAreSC- Where is USC recruiting you at?

Hawkins- "As a receiver."

WeAreSC- Your teammate, Wes Mauia, is also getting a lot of recruiting attention. Talk about what kind of player he is.

Hawkins- "That guy is the real deal. He can beat anybody. He's fast and wherever the ball is, he's around it. I'm like ‘How are you getting there before me?'"

WeAreSC- Do you play any other sports?

Hawkins- "I run track."

WeAreSC- What events do you run and what are your best times?

Hawkins- "I run the 100m and both of the relays. My best time is 10.8."

WeAreSC- Do you have a max on the bench and squat?

Hawkins- "My max is 225 on bench. I haven't squatted."

WeAreSC- What are your plans for the summer?

Hawkins- "I'm just going to the Miami camp and I've got a lot of people that I'm going to work with. I'm supposed to go to the Beyond 2000 camp and the elite 11."

WeAreSC- Do you want to take all of your trips and go through the process or would you rather commit early if the right offer comes along?

Hawkins- "I want to take my trips and through the process so I make the right decision."
