Junior to Watch: WR Michael Bumpus

WeAreSC.com caught up with one of the top wide receivers in the nation recently, who also happened to receive a scholarship offer from Pete Carroll the same evening we spoke with him. He was the consensus best wideout at the USC Nike Camp on April 6th, and he gave the following update regarding his recruitment…

Michael Bumpus is a silky smooth tight route runner from Culver City High School with soft hands, and great elusiveness and agility. He has already been ranked in ESPN's top 25 wide receivers in the nation for the class of 2004. He is one of nine wideouts nationally to receive the highest ranking from The Insider's Max Emfinger. Even though Michael is probably more quick than fast, he still runs a 4.48 forty. Add that with a 32" vertical and a 3.9 shuttle time and one can see why he was his league's MVP, and such a sought after recruit. Bumpus was also All-State as a junior while playing both ways as well as punting. In fact, he averaged over 40 yards per punt last fall. Playing at wide receiver, Michael had 75 receptions for 1,100 yards and 17 touchdowns. Playing at free safety, he had 65 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. USC is recruiting Bumpus at wide receiver with a possibility of playing in the secondary. He wears #5.

Michael has attended the USC Nike Camp, USC one-day camp on April 13th, and will be attending the speed camp at USC on either June 7th or 14th. He measured out at 6'0" and 185 pounds at the SC Nike Camp. He was able to do 6 reps of 185 pounds and currently maxes out at 225 pounds on the bench, and 330 pounds on the squat. He is a self-proclaimed sports fanatic who also plays soccer, and practices with his school's track team. He scored 17 goals last season as a striker for Culver City High last season.

There has obviously been several schools in contact with Bumpus. He lists USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon, Oregon State, Florida State, Miami, and Oklahoma as early favorites. USC offered Michael in Mid-May, the same day as Oregon State. West Virginia has also offered. There has been a Bumpus at a PacTen school in the recent past as Larry Bumpus played at Oregon State in the 90's. Michael would like to take all 5 of his official trips.

In regards to USC, Michael has been to a few practices and really likes the atmosphere and coaches. He has been in contact with Coach Carroll and Coach Burns from SC. Bumpus expects to be fully qualified very soon as he is awaiting his SAT results from May 3rd. He would like to major in business management or communications in college. Michael Bumpus is one to watch for the class of 2004.
