JR to Watch: DL Jason Roberts

Fresno Central's Jason Roberts is a 6'4, 213 pound defensive end who you can expect to hear more of after an impressive showing at the Stanford Nike camp. A speed rusher who loves to get after the quarterback, he amassed 88 tackles and 14 sacks as a junior. With his recruitment heating up, Roberts is holding strong with three favorites. Are the Trojans in the mix?

WeAreSC- What schools are you looking at right now?

Roberts- "Fresno State, USC, and Washington."

WeAreSC- Do you have any offers?

Roberts- "Fresno State offered, and Washington, they still have to look at my films and stuff."

WeAreSC- Do you have a leader out of the group of three that you named?

Roberts- "Well, pretty much all three of those are my top three choices."

WeAreSC- Have you been getting a lot of calls in May?

Roberts- "Yeah, all three of them and I've been talking to some other people, but those three are the one's I'm really interested in."

WeAreSC- What are the factors that you're looking at in choosing a school?

Roberts- "Probably, I guess I'd say the education part of it and how they did as a football team. How their football program is."

WeAreSC- Is early playing time a factor?

Roberts- "I don't know, I'd like to play in my first year, but I don't know. I guess I'd have to see how I come out. I guess it would factor a little bit. I think I'd be able to play by my second year."

WeAreSC- Talk a little about what you like about your three favorites.

Roberts- "Fresno State, I like their program because they're doing really well. They're coming up as a program, and I mean, they're not in the Pac-10 or anything but I just like the environment, the atmosphere of the school. The coach, he seems pretty laid back, and its home. I live in Fresno so it's like right at my house. USC, I'm just pretty impressed by their name and their reputation, and they did pretty good as a football team last year. Washington, I don't really know too much about them but they've been contacting me so I just kind of got interested in them. One of our football players plays for them."

WeAreSC- Which coach called from USC?

Roberts- "Rocky Seto. The head coach was just at our school the other day, Friday."

WeAreSC- What did Coach Seto talk to you about?

Roberts- "He just talked to me about that I need to get my grades up, and that he was pretty interested in me to play for him, and wanted to know if I was interested and stuff like that."

WeAreSC- Talk about the USC linemen camp. How did it go? What was it like being taught by those coaches?

Roberts- "It was a little different at first because they taught some stuff that I wasn't used to, that we don't practice at our school. They were pretty cool, you know. They had some good stuff to teach. I learned a lot. I showed them what I had and they showed me what they had. It was cool."

WeAreSC- You got a lot of notice because of your showing at the Stanford Nike Camp.(4.69 40, 4.45 shuttle, 33'0'' vertical) What was that experience like?

Roberts- "It was pretty good. At first I wasn't too sure how I was going to do. There were some pretty impressive players there but I held my own. I thought I did really well. Actually, we were kind of doing stuff that I was used to, that we do at our school, so it wasn't anything hard."

WeAreSC- What do you like to do when you're going one-on-one against that guy across the line from you?

Roberts- "I like to pass rush mostly. It's kind of my favorite thing to do, just use my speed to get around him."

WeAreSC- Do you play any offense?

Roberts- "Yeah, next year I'm going to play tight end."

WeAreSC- Are all of the schools looking at you as a defensive end?

Roberts- "Yeah, because right now they haven't seen me play tight end."

WeAreSC- Do you know your max on bench and squat?

Roberts- "My max is probably about 340, and my squat is 455, 460, something like that. And then power clean is 285. That's my favorite lift, power cleans."

WeAreSC- Are you going to be heading to any other camps this summer?

Roberts- "I know we're going to a camp this upcoming June. I know our coach has it scheduled for us. I don't know, I know there's a camp coming up at USC again. I was thinking about going to it but I'm not sure."

WeAreSC- If the right offer comes along, would you consider committing early, or do you plan on taking your trips?

Roberts- "I could but I'd just like to keep my options open right now, so I'm just kind of seeing what happens. I don't want to commit too early because I still have my whole senior year to play. I'd like to see what can happen. I don't know, if the right offer came along and I really liked the school, I could commit. Fresno State, I almost thought about committing to them but I kind of wanted to wait and see. We get a couple of trips so it would be nice to take those before."
