The Trojans will look to bring in at least one, if not two, tight ends in this class and fortunately there are several good options to choose from this year on the West Coast. At the top of the list are an athletic pass catcher from Arizona and a powerful blocker from California as the USC coaches look to bring in the best athletes available. (6-4, 240) from Desert Vista HS in Arizona has a solid list of offers to validate his standing as one of the top tight ends in the nation with USC
, Notre Dame
and ASU (older brother on team) leading the list. Miller was impressive at the LA Nike Camp with a 28" vertical leap and a nice showing in the one-on-one passing drills but his leg was bothering him a little and he didn't run the 40 which prevented him from being named Camp MVP. Had 27 catches for 540 yards with 6 TD's on offense while also adding over 100 tackles with 11 sacks on defense.
Dale Thompson (6-4, 227) from Santiago HS in Corona played primarily last season as an offensive lineman after breaking his hand early in the season. Thompson earned All-League honors in his stint on the line while blocking for Colorado-bound QB Bernard Jackson but this season Dale is expected to move back to tight end. He's extremely athletic for a man his size and he has the good genes with a father who played at CS Fullerton in the early 80's. As a sophomore TE he had 16 catches for 300 yards and 5 TD's and had 6 catches for 125 yards and 3 TD's in the first three games as a junior before the injury. Had his appendix taken out this spring which slowed him at some camps but he should be fine for summer workouts. USC, UCLA, Colorado and ASU top his list.
One interesting option could also be Anthony Vernaglia from Orange Lutheran. We discussed Anthony earlier when reviewing the WR recruits but he could just as easily end up as a tight end if he comes to Troy. It's nice to have so many options with a good athlete.
Among others who will receive looks this year at the tight end spot are Jordan Fata (Carson), Jaison Williams (Culver City), George Fifita (Birmingham) and Mike Barr (Payson, AZ).
