Junior to watch: WR Dwayne Jarrett

New Brunswick's (NJ) Dwayne Jarrett is a physical freak that will remind many Trojan fans of current USC wide out Mike Williams. With a rare combination of athleticism, speed, and 6'5 size, the talented receiver has already received over 30 official offers, including one from the Trojans. With every top college program in the nation vying for his services, he discusses his favorites, his summer plans, and of special interest, the team that he grew up rooting for.

WeAreSC- What schools are you looking at right now?

Jarrett- "Right now, I'm looking at USC, Pittsburg, Virginia, Syracuse, and Ohio State.  Also, Miami and Notre Dame."

WeAreSC- Have all of those schools offered?

Jarrett- "Yeah."

WeAreSC- Does any school lead out of that group?

Jarrett- "No, they've all been recruiting me pretty hard.  I'm just really evaluating each school right now so I can make a good decision."

WeAreSC- So, did you get a lot of calls in May?

Jarrett- "Yeah, a lot of schools called.  All of the schools that offered me.  Right now I have thirty something offers."

WeAreSC- What are you looking for in the school you choose?

Jarrett- "First, I'm looking at academics.  I just want to make sure I get my degree, that's the main thing.  That comes before football.  The program and college atmosphere, and  how comfortable I feel there, around the coaches and everything."

WeAreSC- Is distance from home a factor?

Jarrett- "It was when I first thought about it, but now it doesn't matter because I want to get away from home.  I was saying I didn't want to go too far because my family wouldn't be able to see me that much, but I talked to a lot of college coaches and they said that wouldn't be a problem for them to fly back and forth.  So it doesn't really matter."

WeAreSC- Is the possibility of early playing time a factor?

Jarrett- "Yeah, most of the coaches that I've talked to right now say that I have the size and body to play right away, but it just depends on me, on how comfortable I feel with the program.  I want to play early if I can.  If I don't feel comfortable, I'll just redshirt, but most likely I'd like to play early."

WeAreSC- Did you have a favorite team growing up?

Jarrett- "Yeah, actually my favorite team growing up over here was a team over there in Los Angeles, USC."

WeAreSC- Living on the east coast, what got you into USC?

Jarrett- "Basically because they pass a lot.  I was always a receiver growing up.  That and they're always in the media, because of Hollywood and everything.  They get a lot of national exposure."

WeAreSC- Which coaches have you spoken to from USC?

Jarrett- "I spoke to Pete Carroll, the head coach, and the wide receiver's coach, Coach Kiffin.  They asked me if going away that far, if it would bother me, and I said ‘No, not really,' because they've always been one of my favorite teams.  I'd like to get the opportunity to get out there.  I always wanted to go to L.A.  I've always been on the east coast my whole life.  So that's another good opportunity for me.  They talked to me about academics.  They were saying, because Mike Williams is over there, I'd be on the opposite side of him.  By the time I get there Keary Colbert will have graduated.  So I could take his spot on the opposite side of Mike and the defense wouldn't know what to do.  You've got two 6'5 receivers out there.  And another thing with USC, they said they'd love for me to play both, because I play basketball too."

WeAreSC- Have you ever been out to Los Angeles?

Jarrett- "No, I've never been out there.  I've always wanted to go to L.A.  I don't know what it is, the movies, or Hollywood, it's just something I'd like to do."

WeAreSC- What do you like about the other schools that you mentioned?

Jarrett- "All of the others have good programs and they have strong schools, like Virginia is one of the best schools on the east coast.  And of course Ohio State, that's another good school plus they won the national championship.  So, that got me interested.  Syracuse, they have my major, I want to major in audio production.  They have one of the best programs in the country for that."

WeAreSC- You brought up basketball and I know you excel in that sport too.  Talk about what kind of impact that will have in your recruitment.

Jarrett- "Everybody is telling me I should keep my options open, so I could try both.  I think I'm going to do that but if it's too much for me, I think most likely I'll drop basketball and concentrate on football."

WeAreSC- Do you have any of your stats from your receiver spot?

Jarrett- "I had like 40 receptions, like 932 yards, and 19 touchdowns."

WeAreSC- That's a pretty high average yards per catch.

Jarrett- "Yeah, my average per catch was like 27 or 28.  When I catch the ball, that's it.  Plus, we had so many good players on the team.  Our quarterback, our running back, the slot, everybody that had the ball had a chance to score.  I only got the ball three or four times a game."

WeAreSC- I know you also play defense.  Where do you play there?

Jarrett- "I play cornerback.  I lead the team in interceptions.  I had 8."

WeAreSC- As a receiver, what do you think your strengths are?

Jarrett- "I know how to use my body and I have real good body control.  I play basketball so that crosses over to football.  And I have pretty good speed, plus I'm taller than everybody.  That's another advantage.  Nobody tries to jam me.  They play fifteen or ten yards off of me."

WeAreSC- Do you have your current height and weight?

Jarrett- "Right now I'm 6'5 and 205 pounds."

WeAreSC- 40 time?

Jarrett- "My best time is 4.45."

WeAreSC- Are you going to any camps?

Jarrett- "I'm not planning on going to any camps.  I'm taking all of my un-official visits to schools that I'm interested in.  We have a team camp.  That's the only camp that I'm going to participate in."

WeAreSC- You mentioned that you plan on taking some un-official visits.  Do you know where you plan to visit yet?

Jarrett- "I'm going to USC.  I'm not sure when yet.  I have to pay for it, so I have to plan that.  That's basically it, because during spring break I took a lot of tours of schools that I'm interested in, Pittsburg, Virginia, and Syracuse.  The only other school that I haven't gotten to is Ohio State."

WeAreSC- Do you plan on taking all of your official visits?

Jarrett- "Yeah, I plan on taking all five right now.  That might change."
