Fall Camp Day Nine: Notes & Quick Hits

USC fall camp is well into its second week. The Trojans took in a change of scenery Tuesday, relocating practice from Howard Jones Field to the outfield of the baseball diamond, Dedeaux Field.

Flournoy is Flourishing

Just last week USC head coach Lane Kiffin said if the battle was already over for the third spot at receiver, De'Von Flournoy would be the Trojans number three guy.

Flournoy continued to show why he has climbed in Kiffin's book during practice on Tuesday.

Nearly every time a big play was made, it was number ten hauling the ball in, including a nice grab over cornerback Anthony Brown during 7 on 7 drills.

"DeVon Flournoy made some big plays again which is good to see," Kiffin said after Tuesday's practice.

When asked if it was Flournoy's best practice to date, Kiffin responded, "I think probably in the fall. I think he had a bunch of these in the spring. He had a really good spring and you know he continues to do that, so it's great to see."

"I feel like I'm getting a lot of opportunities, and I'm taking advantage of them by executing the play calling," Flournoy said after practice. "I feel like I had a good day but I have to have another good day tomorrow and a day after that and a day after that. [I] can't ever be satisfied with just a good day or a good week."

Flournoy capped his practice with a leaping catch over safety Demetrius Wright during closing 11 on 11 drills.

Kiffin's Worries

There was no tackling and only shoulder pads were worn on day nine of practice, but there were an alarming number of issues taking care of the ball.

"For a thud tempo," explained Kiffin, "to have three fumbles when it's not tackle and it's not center exchanging, just fumbles, it's a good job by the defensive strips and not a very good job by the offense of taking care of the ball."

The three fumbles including a stripped ball from receiver George Farmer, who was back to full participation Tuesday.

The defense also gave up a handful of explosive plays over their heads.

"That's something we've been really good at this spring and fall, the best since we've been here about staying deep and not giving up big plays," Kiffin said. "So obviously we need to work on that."

Both Farmer and Flournoy contributed in making it a rough day for the Trojans' secondary.

Tuerk at Tackle

True freshman Max Tuerk is making the most of his opportunity at left tackle with Aundrey Walker still out with an undisclosed injury.

Tuerk lined up at left tackle for the fourth straight day of fall camp.

"I think Max is doing really well," explained Kiffin after practice. "You don't call his name a lot which is a good thing with lineman and it's very unusual, usually those guys struggle and so to play left tackle for us and really go against a good quality right end, he's doing a good job."

"[He does] really well at the run game," Kiffin said. "He's got some work to do at the pass game, but really plays with great pad leverage and well on the run game."

No timetable has been set for the return of Walker, leaving open to speculation the possibility that Tuerk may start the first game of the season at left tackle.

"I mean if he has to, he has to," was Kiffin's response Sunday after practice. "That's a hard question, I mean if he has to start he has to start, we'll get him ready."
