Second Chances

A familiar face returned to practice a week ago wearing No. 39 as Simione Vehikite once again took the field with the Trojans. Vehikite sat out during the spring due to legal issues.

After missing spring practice due to legal issues, redshirt junior Simione Vehikite is back to action this fall with the USC football team. Vehikite made his return to Howard Jones Field a week ago and is now looking ahead to the rest of his future at USC.

"I'm very thankful, very grateful, for everyone that allowed me back," Vehikitie said after practice, as the Trojans prepare to travel to Syracuse. "(I'm) thankful for coming back to practice and being able to play football again -- it's been a blessing."

It is also a second chance, which USC Coach Lane Kiffin says is part of his job as the leader of USC's football program, to work with kids who make mistakes. "I'm glad we were able to do that," Kiffin said of bringing Vehikite back to the program. "He's paid a big price, missed a lot of stuff, very embarrassed. I'm glad we can give him this chance, and hopefully he proves us right."

Vehikite is a backup linebacker for the Trojans. He played in all 12 games for the Trojans in 2011 on special teams, as a reserve linebacker, and even as a fullback. He recorded six tackles last season, two of which were against Syracuse.
