In existence since 1888, never has the USC football program witnessed an opponent gain 730 yards and score 62 points as Oregon did. The Ducks' running back Kenjon Barner set a single game opponent record on his way to rushing for 325 yards.
Coach Lane Kiffin says no one is to blame more than himself and his staff for the disappointing performance, "We have to look at ourselves always," he said after practice on Tuesday. "You can't fault your players when your numbers are like that."
He also said no single aspect of the Trojans' defense is to blame. Not the scheme, not personnel, not the player's execution, "If you give up those kind of numbers it has to be everything," he explained.
Barkley Sets Goal
Through nine games this season quarterback Matt Barkley has thrown ten interceptions, three more than all of last season.
After throwing two picks during Saturday's loss to Oregon, Barkley and Kiffin sat down to create a goal for the rest of the season and the one they came up with is simple
No more interceptions.
"It's always a goal to not throw a pick, but we're going to make more of an emphasis on that," Barkley said.
Despite the ten interceptions on the stat sheet, Kiffin is quick to defend his quarterback, noting tipped passes and held receivers are out of Barkley's control.
"We have to individually look at all the interceptions to see what's really happening," Kiffin said.
"Decision making all-around is something we can get better at it," said Barkley, who went on to explain that he made a bad decision on his second thrown interception against Oregon because he "hates taking sacks."
"Sometimes I try to get the ball out rather than taking a sack," he admitted, "so I just have to be smart."
Kiffin wouldn't say if he voted or planned to vote on this Election Day, "I don't answer political questions," he said. "They are a no-win."
Asked why he decided to try for the two-point conversion after the final USC touchdown against Oregon Kiffin said there was no real thought put into the decision, before adding "We just wanted to see if they'd get another pass interference on Marqise (Lee. See if they'd break a record for a single game."
Freshman Max Tuerk has now started the last two games at left tackle and has done a "phenomenal" job according to Kiffin, "You have to give the kid a ton of credit for what he's been able to do," he said.
USC players Robert Woods and Marqise Lee were engaged in a fake-Twitter account battle on Monday night. A fake account posing as UCLA player Randall Goforth was "talking trash" about USC when Lee and Woods went to their team's defense. Kiffin said Tuesday that UCLA Coach Jim Mora called him to make him aware of the situation and to let Kiffin know it was a fake account and his players played no role in it. Kiffin says he called Woods and Lee to make sure they "weren't responding at that point" to the fake account.
USC announced the date of its season opener in 2013 against Hawaii has been moved to August 29th instead of the originally scheduled August 31st.
Saturday's Homecoming game against Arizona State will kickoff at noon and will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
