Pendergast it is

USC hires defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast to take over for the departed Monte Kiffin, as first reported by ESPN's Joe Schad.

In a rumored move talked about since days following USC's final game of the season in the Sun Bowl, USC head coach Lane Kiffin has hired Clancy Pendergast as the Trojans' new defensive coordinator.

Pendergast, the former defensive coordinator at California under Jeff Tedford, replaces the departed Monte Kiffin.

Pendergast brings with him six years of experience as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, including a 2008 trip to the Super Bowl with the Arizona Cardinals.

In Feb. 2010 he took over as the defensive coordinator at Cal, giving him three years of Pac-12 experience.

USC players and recruits took to Twitter to express their excitement over the hire.

Junior safety Gerald Bowman (@Gerald_Bowman) tweeted, "Coach Pendergast!!! Yessir I'm Ready!!!"

USC 2013 commit and expected early enrollee Kenny Bigelow (@4_Fighton_0) followed with, "So Coach Pendergast I've been hearing great things about you. And now I'm excited to play for u."

In Pendergast's first two seasons at Cal his unit led the Pac-12 in total defense and pass defense on its way to producing nine NFL players. In 2011 he produced the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.
