Spring battles: tailback

USC lost Curtis McNeal to graduation but return Silas Redd and D.J. Morgan in 2013, plus Tre Madden will make his return after suffering a torn ligament a year ago...

Silas Redd, senior
Silas Redd shared the job at tailback in 2012 with Curtis McNeal, but with McNeal graduated look for Redd to stand alone at the top of the depth chart. Redd finished with 905 yards rushing and ten touchdowns in his debut season for the Trojans.

DJ Morgan, RS junior
DJ Morgan missed a few games in 2012 after having minor knee surgery but was still able to play in seven of the Trojans' contests. Morgan flashed at times throughout the season, seeing sporadic playing time with Redd and McNeal sidelined with minor injuries. With McNead sidelined with concussion-like symptoms at Utah, Morgan carried the ball nine times for 56 yards. Look for him to take the bulk of carries after Redd this spring.

Tre Madden, junior
After tearing a ligament in his left knee and being sidelined through the season, Madden will be back on the field this spring for the Trojans. Madden made the move from linebacker to tailback last spring and received strong reviews from the coaching staff after the switch. If Madden is back in football form, he'll push Morgan for the spot behind Redd.

Buck Allen, RS sophomore
Buck Allen only saw action in three games for the Trojans in 2012, carrying the ball six times for 32 yards. With McNeal gone, Allen will have a chance to contend to be the third back in the rotation.

Justin Davis, freshman
Justin Davis enrolled early at USC in January for the chance to start competing for a role this spring. Davis is a five-star back coming out of high school and will challenge for a spot high on the depth chart before entering fall camp.

My Prediction: Redd and Morgan will lead the way this spring, Madden will make a comeback to round out a three-back rotation.
