Notebook: Future QB catches practice

The Trojans were back on Howard-Jones Field Thursday evening for spring practice. USC head coach Lane Kiffin announced another player who is out for the rest of spring drills...and a future Trojan watched from the sideline...

Quarterback battle continues on
If any of the three quarterback candidates to take over for the departed Matt Barkley are inching ahead in the starting race, USC coach Lane Kiffin isn't letting on.

"Not really," Kiffin said after Thursday's practice when asked if anyone is ahead. "It's good to have Max [Wittek] back out here and he made some good throws down the field today."

Cody continues to do well," Kiffin continued. "Max [Browne] probably had his best day with some really good red zone throws and a couple of touchdowns in there."

Wittek said after Tuesday's practice that he wouldn't be surprised if Kiffin doesn't name a starter at the conclusion of spring practices. "USC is built on competition," Wittek explained. "Competition definitely gets the best of everyone."

Though that doesn't mean Wittek wouldn't like to know. "That's kind of a tricky question," he said smiling, when asked if he indeed would like to spend his summer days knowing who the starting quarterback will be. "You always want to be as high up as possible, essentially that would being you -- somewhat -- a piece of mind."

Kiffin has set no timeline in regards to naming a starter.

Farmer healthy, close to big plays
Junior receiver George Farmer has seen his share of ups and downs his first two years at Troy, constantly battling nagging injuries.

Farmer has been healthy throughout the spring, with exception of a minor shouler injury one day, and looks to be on the verge of making standout plays.

He caught a few deep passes on Thursday and narrowly missed a few other acrobatic grabs in the end zone. "We need to have George make the hard plays," Kiffin said after practice. "We need him to go up, get the ball, and take it away."

He's doing that," Kiffin continued. "It's great."

Injury report
USC is down another player for the remainder of spring practices. Kiffin announced after Thursday's practice that tight end Xavier Grimble will not return to the field for spring drills. Grimble is out with what was reported by USC as a stress fracture to his rib on Tuesday, Kiffin calling it a "fractured chest" on Thursday.

Junior receiver Marqise Lee has yet to be cleared to return to practice since suffering a knee injury at practice on March 9. He is still listed as day-to-day.

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jordan Simmons was sick and did not practice.
