After missing time during the 2011 and 2012 seasons due to injury, junior George Farmer wanted to turn the page this spring and finally play football healthy.
He made it through the first three weeks of practice without incident but on Tuesday the injury bug seemed to hit the 6-foot-1 205-pound receiver again.
About 50 minutes into practice, Farmer was running a routine route when he suddenly went down. There were no defenders during the drill -- he did not come in contact with anyone or anything on the field.
He laid on the field for about five minutes as the training staff tended to his left knee before Farmer was carted off the field, unable to put any weight on his left leg.
A source said after practice that there was no swelling around the injured knee and Farmer will undergo an MRI on Wednesday.
Intensity boils over
A scuffle broke out at the end of practice during goal line drills. It started between defensive end Morgan Breslin and tailback Buck Allen. Noticeably jumping in the mix were defensive linemen Antwaun Woods and George Uko.
Defensive line coach Ed Orgeron wasted no time trying to break it up, until he found himself at the end of a flying arm, resulting in a bloody nose for the remainder of practice.
Asked if there was a "positive" Kiffin and the team could take from the scuffle, the USC head coach quipped, "You mean like when we lead the country in penalties and were 6-1?... and then we got that fixed and didn't have any penalties and won one more game?"
It's always a tough line," he continued. "You want your defense to be physical… but also make great decisions."
It looked like a field trip to USC spring practice Tuesday afternoon for the Gardena (Calif. ) Serra football team, which includes two 2014 USC recruits -- Adoree Jackson and Dwight Williams.
Jackson, a five-star defensive back, holds a USC offer among 20 others. Williams is still waiting on an offer from the Trojans, but has plenty of options with his 30 offers.
