Breaking it down: Fullbacks

USC wrapped up spring practices and now it's time to take a look back at performances and the depth chart -- in order to look ahead at the 2013 season and what you can expect when fall camp opens in August. The situation seems steady at fullback...

Fullbacks
Soma Vainuku
Vainuku started spring practices off strong before being sidelined with a knee injury. The redshirt sophomore was the starting fullback in 2012 and is probably most known for a few drops -- including one at the goal line against Notre Dame. Through his healthy spring practices Vainuku showed more consistency receiving the ball -- though there was still the occasional drop. I expect Vainuku to split time in 2013 with sophomore Jahleel Pinner.

Vainuku made good use of his time injured during the spring assisting the running backs coach during drills and standing near the coaches during 7on7 and 11on11 drills -- much like Matt Barkley did during his time injured at the end of the season.

Jahleel Pinner
Pinner was Vainuku's backup in 2012. He had no carries or receptions. But after a steady spring, expect the sophomore to carry more of the load at the position this fall and even challenge for the starting spot.

Simione Vehikite
The musical chairs of positions continues for Vehikite. His official USC bio states that he would be competing at linebacker in 2013, however Vehikite is third on the depth chart at fullback. Look for him to have an impact role on special teams this season, but only be utilized as a reserve at fullback.
