Trojans make up ground with Calhoun

FOX Sports NEXT caught up with 2014 four-star linebacker D.J. Calhoun at Passing Down's Best of the West 7on7 tournament in Southern California. Calhoun visited both the Trojans and Bruins before playing in the tournament.

The battle is on between the Los Angeles schools for 2014 El Cerrito (Calif.) linebacker D.J. Calhoun.

Calhoun was in Southern California over the weekend to take an unofficial visit to USC and to attend the UCLA spring game at the Rose Bowl before playing with his TMP 7on7 team Sunday at Passing Down.

Calhoun hasn't been shy about the Bruins having the edge in the battle but said Saturday between tournament games that the Trojans made up considerable ground.

"The visit to USC was great," he said. "I got to have the whole tour, meet the whole coaching staff… I loved it."

The 6-foot-1 205-pound linebacker spent a good amount of time with the Trojans' new linebackers coach Mike Ekeler. "He's a wonderful coach," Calhoun said. "He's outgoing and everything. That's the type of coach I love."

The Calhoun family is no stranger to the land of Cardinal and Gold, D.J.'s older sister is a sophomore on the USC women's basketball team.

But enough about USC -- because half of Calhoun's day was spent at crosstown rival UCLA and the Bruins' spring game at the Rose Bowl. "I got to see the team, how they act in the locker room, and they got me pumped up in the locker room," he said. "I loved it."

Calhoun admitted that though he had a great time at the Rose Bowl with UCLA, the Trojans ultimately closed the gap over the weekend -- and even took a slight lead.

"On Junior Day [at USC] I didn't get to SC's coaching staff and everything," he explained. "This time I got to see everybody."

It's going to be hard."

Though the main schools in his recruitment are UCLA and USC, the four-star recruit says he's still open to considering the others who have offered him.

Calhoun is planning to make a verbal commitment after preseason football wraps up at El Cerrito.
