Trojans are a family favorite

2014 Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offensive lineman Damien Mama has 29 offers -- he hasn't narrowed the list down but is close -- and names seven who are standing out now.

2014 Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco offensive lineman Damien Mama has been a tough player to get a hold of lately and if you've been one to call to only have been sent to voicemail, you're not alone.

Mama, who currently lists 29 offers, recently has been out of touch with the world after his parents temporarily shut off his phone.

"[The recruiting process] is daily," Mama explained after Bosco's coaches barbecue. "I like talking on the phone with the coaches, but sometimes it gets to be a little too much so I had to step away from the phone."

But the process still manages to catch up -- and keep up -- with Mama, who says he receives mail by the bucket load.

The 6-foot-5 345-pound lineman hasn't officially narrowed his list of 29 offers but says there is a small handful of schools standing out including Ole Miss, Alabama, Washington, USC, UCLA, Oregon State, and Arizona State.

The Rebels, Huskies, Trojans, and Beavers all had coaches in attendance at the Bosco barbecue to watch the action.

Mama says he calls Ole Miss nearly everyday to chat with Coach [Ben] Aigamaua. "We talk about life in general," Mama said, "football and being a Samoan – Samoan things."

It's an aspect of Mama's life -- and recruitment -- that is very important to him. "You feel more comfortable with Polynesian coaches because they can relate to you… and the Samoan way," he said.

Washington, Oregon State, and Arizona State also fall into Mama's "Samoan friendly" category.

USC is a Mama family favorite. "[Mom and dad] want their boy to stay close to home," Mama said. As for whether or not Damien would like to stay home, "It's an option…well I'm not sure yet."

It could be a challenge for the Pac-12 to keep Mama on the West Coast. Just a day prior to Bosco's barbecue, he was on the phone with the head coach of the National Champions.

"I got off the phone with [Alabama head coach Nick] Saban [Wednesday," Mama said. "That was pretty cool. It was a little bit intimidating at first, he scared me a little bit, but it was good to talk to him." Mama said shortly into the conversation he became more comfortable with Saban and that it was "pretty cool to put a voice with the face."

Mama says he's hoping to officially narrow his list to ten or 15 "soon".

You might guess these seven are a lock to make it to Mama's next round.
