Talking with the three-star recruit at Double Pump in Anaheim (Calif.), he was very open about two simple facts.
He wants an offer from USC and his main focus right now is making an academic turnaround.
"I just fell in love with [USC], I just like it. That's my college," Powell told FOX Sports NEXT after his final game Thursday night. "I'm from L.A. and I just love it. I really like the campus.
"[Andy Enfield] seems to be a really good coach. I like Jason Hart a lot. He was a coach at Taft a couple years before I got there and I just like his coaching style a lot."
Powell says the USC staff is showing interest, but that the coaches have noted that they need him to put in more work in the classroom.
"They've told me to keep my head up. Keep getting better, working on my body," Powell explained. "Just keep on bringing my grades up."
Powell candidly admitted he didn't apply himself as much as he could have in the classroom, but through summer school this year he has made strides and is improving his study habits.
As the 6-foot-2 156-pound athlete waits for his first offer, he says he is continuing to refine the parts of his game he knows he's already strong at, including his dribbling, shooting, and getting to the rim. He's also putting extra emphasis this summer on the defensive end of the court where he knows he needs to improve his defense and being more of a vocal leader.
