The Trojans put pads on for the first time this fall on day three. "Obviously it was good for us as coaches, kind of the next step going from helmets before we get to full pads," USC head coach Lane Kiffin said after Monday's shoulder-pad practice. "It will be good film to see."
Day three of the QB battle
The quarterback battled forged ahead Monday and Kiffin said no one stood out, "We'll go back and watch the film to see," he said.
Redshirt sophomores Max Wittek and Cody Kessler are taking the majority of the reps at quarterback. It would appear, based on reps during 11on11 drills to conclude practice, that freshman Max Browne is falling behind in the race.
Offense responds to the Sunday beat down
It was no secret Sunday's practice, day two, was dominated by the Trojans' defense. The offense bounced back Monday to put on a respectable performance. "They seemed to take care of the football better," Kiffin said. "That was the number one concern yesterday especially the quarterbacks."
Through three days Kiffin says no one has set themselves apart in the battle for the starting spots at cornerback, "They've all flashed at times," he said. "Making plays, breaking up plays… a big thing is going to be tackling when we put on the full pads and when balls get to the perimeter like they do in this conference."
Multiple players in the secondary had impressive pass breakups Monday. Josh Shaw and Su'a Cravens both came away with a couple of strips
Freshmen learning quickly
Freshman linebacker Michael Hutchings took some reps with the first team on Monday. "He has done a great job in preparation, much like many of our guys the last couple of years – the elite freshmen who take the game very serious," Kiffin said. "He was obviously coached extremely well in high school so he's obviously come, has jumped in and looks like a veteran in there."
Kiffin also mentioned Nico Falah and Khaliel Rodgers have done a good job jumping into practice through the first three days as true freshmen who were not a part of the early enrollee group. "Those guys have jumped in there and we've done a lot of ‘threes' the last two days especially to get those guys some reps," Kiffin said.
The Aundrey Walker files
The junior left tackle wasn't able to complete practice on day three. "He's had – like Aundrey has, shown flashes the first couple of days," Kiffin said. "Aundrey's deal, and really the whole deal up front will be when we put on real, full pads and play like we expect up there. It will be a couple days from now."
Chad Wheeler stepped over to left tackle in Walker's absence. He ran a lap after jumping offsides.
