Well, this could get awkward.
The Trojans have yet to select captains for the 2013 team, according to USC head coach Lane Kiffin. The team is expected to make their picks on Monday.
Typically, a quarterback earns the ‘captain' title. But, you know, they haven't named a starting quarterback. So… what if it's Cody Kessler? What if it's Max Wittek named by his teammates to be the captain?
When USC released its depth chart on Saturday co-starters were listed at both cornerback positions. Kevon Seymour and Devian Shelton on one side of the field, Anthony Brown and Torin Harris on the other side of the field.
On Sunday, Kiffin said Seymour, Brown and Harris have separated themselves from the group. "Three guys are going to play a lot," he said. "[We'll] continue to develop the rest of them.
"Torin seems to be at full strength right now, so all three of those guys will play a lot."
Keep your roster handy when the Trojans are on defense. Between free safety and strong safety, six different players are listed as co-starters. Kiffin says he anticipates all of the safeties playing "not just on special teams, but on defense also."
Walker and Martinez are listed as co-starters on the Trojans depth chart at right guard.
Martinez was wearing a short walking boot on his right foot.
"We have two guys in there that are practicing at times, banged up," Kiffin said. "But hopefully both John and Aundrey will be able to play."
Sixth year walk-on Abe Markowitz, who spent fall camp taking reps at center, has moved to right guard in the absence of Walker and Martinez, according to Kiffin. Redshirt freshman Jordan Simmons is also taking reps at the position.
