Heidari holds on

After a rough start to the season, missing two field goals against both Washington State and Notre Dame in the losses, USC coaches decided to open the kicking competition the week leading up to Utah...

It was an open competition this week at USC for the starting kicking spot.

After a 14-10 loss at Notre Dame that included two missed field goals by Andre Heidari, interim head coach Ed Orgeron announced Tuesday that he and special teams coach John Baxter decided to open the competition.

Heidari also missed two field goals in the Trojans 10- loss to Washington State in week two of the season.

He is six for 11 this season.

Sophomore walk-on Alex Wood and redshirt junior Craig McMahon challenged Heidari this week.

Wood played in two games for the Trojans in 2012, making 8-of-8 point after touchdown attempts. He did not attempt any field goals.

USC announced prior to kickoff Saturday morning that Heidari won the competition over the week and will remain USC's starting kicker.
