Clay Helton, Vegas 12-19-13

USC interim head coach Clay Helton recaps the Trojans' practice in Las Vegas before their bowl game on Saturday.

USC went to Bishop Gorman High School Thursday afternoon for a brisk walk-through before they take on Fresno State on Saturday in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl. Take a look at what interim head coach Clay Helton had to say following a chilly practice.

Opening remarks: "Brief statement, what a really great day here in Las Vegas. I tell you what, we woke up here this morning and had 24 kids go to two outreach programs, one Opportunity Villages and then to go see an elementary school and hand out shoes to needy kids. To see Marqise Lee and Xavier Grimble and Dion Bailey and those type of guys just be around and interact with young people was absolutely awesome. And to have a facility like Bishop Gorman, we really want to thank them for letting us use their space. We had a really spirited practice, finalized our game plan, reviewed everything today and I really like how the guys focus was all the way through. They've handled this bowl game excellent. This bowl game has been beyond our imagination, it's been excellent, first-class all the way from the welcome last night to the facilities that we've stayed in, so we are so glad to be here and are one day closer to a great game."

On Bishop Gorman's facilities: "This is an impressive place as I've ever seen. You can tell football and sports are very important here. We are very grateful to be able to practice here."

On where the team stands: "I've always said I'm so proud of this group. They're the definition of our sports motto, "Fight On." To face adversity after their fifth game and go 3-2, lose their head coach and then get another head coach and rally around him and do what they did all season, beat the No. 4 team, go up to Oregon State and do what they did, trying to play for their tenth win, now under their third head coach, trying to lead them through this, they've just had such poise and such professionalism, you can see it in their work out there, there is a want to get the tenth win. It would be a great statement and we want to represent our Trojan family really well."

On the attitude toward Las Vegas versus last year's bowl game: "You've heard it from the kids and I've heard it from them too, it's a totally different atmosphere. When you're trying to get a double-digit win, that's a special thing. We've talked about finishing and we want to make our Trojan family proud. We want this team to be remembered. It's not a wasted year. With 47 scholarship players walking out there on Saturday and being able to play a very, very good top 25 team in Fresno State and to get that tenth win would be very special and hopefully catapult USC into something bigger under Coach [Steve] Sarkisian."
