USC coach Steve Sarkisian discusses the Trojans spring game…

When USC released its spring roster, controversy began to swirl over No. 55.

The number is worn by senior linebacker Lamar Dawson. However, it was also given this spring to freshman offensive lineman Toa Lobendahn.

No. 55 has traditionally been reserved for USC linebackers since All-American Junior Seau wore it during his time as a Trojan in the 1980s.

During the Trojans spring game, former USC All-American Willie McGinest was interviewed by a USC spokesperson who asked him about Lobendahn wearing No. 55. McGinest's response reflected a displeasure with the decision to stray from tradition to give the number to an offensive player.

Scout asked USC coach Steve Sarkisian after the spring game about his decision to give Lobendahn the number. Sarkisian responded, "It was probably a little bit of a miscommunication and I dropped the ball there.

"We'll fix it."

Asked for clarification, Sarkisian said Lobendahn will "probably not" be wearing No. 55 when the Trojans open fall camp in August.

"They reality is its a great number," Sarkisian said. "It's a historical number, a lot of great players have worn that number and hopefully as we move forward we continue to have great players to put that number on. It's a great deal of respect to guys like Junior, Willie, Chris Claiborne and Keith Rivers. All those guys. A lot of great guys have worn it and hopefully we can continue to recruit guys that are worthy of wearing it."
