Clayton Johnston had a solid junior season but has taken his game to a completely different level this past spring/summer. He put on almost 40 pounds in the last year, improved his strength and added more flexibility and athleticism as well.
The big tackle attended USC's Lineman Camp on Saturday with high hopes and walked away with an offer from the Trojans.
"I'm very excited, I can't stop smiling," Johnston said. "This is a big offer for me and USC is very high on my list. Growing up, I didn't really have a favorite school, I liked USC and UCLA but having this offer from USC is huge for me and I'm definitely going to think about whether I should make a quick decision or not.
"I have a top three of USC, Arizona State and California. Wake Forest is in there too. I still want to take my official visits but like I said, with the USC offer, it's going to give me something to think about.
"This just happened and I'm still on an emotional high so I won't make any decisions right now. I'll sit down and talk with my family and then we'll go from there."
Johnston said he had a strong first session this morning and could tell he was impressing the coaching staff.
"Between the first and second session, during the break, Coach Drevno had me and two other linemen come in to his office to talk to us. We watched some film and he told us he liked us a lot and wanted us to e Trojans.
"The other two players already had offers so I wasn't sure what that meant for me but I was hopeful. The second session was crazy, the coaches worked me hard.
"I took five or six reps in a row at one point, they kept calling out the defensive staff to find the best defensive ends to go against me. I think they were seeing if I could handle it and if I would break. I stood up to it though and won all my reps so that was a good thing."
When the camp was over, Coach Drevno went over and talked with Johnston and then Coach Sarkisian walked over as well.
"I was hopeful they would offer but wasn't 100%," Johnston said. "Coach Drevno talked to me for a while so I didn't know if I would get it. Then when Sark walked over, he told me they liked me a lot and were offering me a scholarship.
"That was the best feeling ever. I was so happy and excited to have this offer. Sark didn't put any pressure on me to commit but Drevno said he would love for me to think about it and just told me how much they liked me. Like I said, I'm going to think about but I may do some unofficial visits, get to ASU and Cal again and then take another visit to USC as well and just go from there."
