Gardena (Calif.) Serra wide out Deontay Burnett has a champion at USC.
A champion, in this context, is a coach who fights or argues to bring
in a recruit who is on the cusp of a scholarship offer. Burnett had a
champion at USC going into the Rising Stars Camp last week and still
has one coming out of it.
"When I first arrived, all of the coaches were happy that I was camping
with them," said Burnett. "All of the coaches showed me love.
"I went there to compete and stand out to the coaches, which I think I
did. Coach Tee Martin has been a fan of mine since last season, and he
really wants me to get an offer, but I had to work out in front of
Coach (Steve) Sarkisian because he had never seen me play. I think I
Burnett walked away from the camp without a scholarship offer from USC, but the
chapter on his recruitment by the Trojans is not over.
"I think I'm a USC caliber receiver," said Burnett. "The best part of
the camp was one-on-ones. There were two sessions of the camp.
"The first session I went five-for-five during one-on-ones. The second
half of the camp, I went six-for-six. I didn't get stopped."
As for the scholarship offer, Burnett isn't stressing out over USC as
"I don't know about the scholarship," said Burnett. "That's up for them
to decide. I'm just out here ready to compete and earn more
scholarships. If they offered, it would be nice.
"Tee Martin has been telling me he has wanted to offer me since the
beginning of summer. He says he is working hard on it, but I don't
know when it's coming."
Burnett's greatest asset, even among a star studded group of skill
players at Serra last season, is his ability to stretch the defense
"I think I'm improving my ability to separate from the defensive back,"
said Burnett. "The deep ball is the biggest part of my game. At the
NIKE Camp I ran a 4.5, so I can run past most defenders."
From USC, Burnett will unofficially visit Utah and Washington State
While Burnett would like to have the option of staying home, he isn't
unfamiliar with leaving the state to explore the possibility of leaving
Southern California for college.
"I've been to unofficials to Arizona, ASU and Cal, so I know the
feeling of getting away from home," said Burnett. "That's not a big
deal. I just want to meet the coaches and get a feel for the college.
See what fits me."
Burnett has no timeline for a commitment, although his family wouldn't
mind getting the process over with sooner rather than later.
"I'm just taking it day-by-day, but my parents have some specific
places they'd like to see me go," said Burnett. "They're getting tired of
recruiting, but I think I would like to get things done more toward the
end of the season.
"I want to see the depth charts of each team, the coaches and get use
to the environment wherever I decide to go."
