USC quarterback Carson Palmer threw 21-yard touchdown passes to wide receiver Kareem Kelly and fullback Charlie Landrigan and cornerback Darrell Rideaux returned a kickoff 100 yards for another score to highlight a 106-play intrasquad scrimmage at the Coliseum on Tuesday evening (Aug. 21).

The Trojans also got short TD runs from tailbacks Sultan McCullough (2 yards) and Eric Reese (1 yard) and quarterback Matt Leinart (2 yards), a 15-yard scoring pass from quarterback Billy Hart to wide receiver Ryan Kaiser and field goals from David Davis (20 yards) and John Wall (30 yards).

USC's quarterbacks hit 65.5% of their passes (36-of-55) and completed their first 8 aerials. Palmer was 20-of-31 for 187 yards (he was intercepted on the last play of the scrimmage by linebacker Bobby Otani on a high pass that went off the hands of a receiver). Matt Cassel was 6-of-8 for 56 yards, Hart was 5-of-7 for 51 yards and Leinart was 4-of-6 for 28 yards.

Rideaux also had a 100-yard scoring kickoff return in Troy's previous scrimmage last Saturday (Aug. 18).

Kelly caught 7 passes for 53 yards, Landrigan had 6 for 66 yards, wide receiver Devin Pitts had 4 for 37 and wide receiver William Buchanon added 3 for 47.

McCullough ran for 21 yards on 7 carries and had a pair of catches for another 14 yards, while tailback Chris Howard had 21 yards on 6 tries.

Cornerback Kevin Arbet made 8 tackles, while cornerback Chris Cash and linebackers Aaron Graham, Frank Strong and Chris Prosser added 5 stops each. All 3 of defensive end Lonnie Ford's tackles were sacks (for minus 12 yards).

The Trojans were penalized 9 times and gave away 4 fumbles.

Our quarterbacks completed a lot of passes and Carson had a nice night, said new USC head coach Pete Carroll. We were catching it and move the ball down the field. I'm very happy with that. Our first team defense played good, solid ball. Only a few plays got away from them. They played real hard and controlled the tempo when they were in.

The scrimmage had a good, physical tempo. That gives me confidence that we'll be ready for our opener.

USC begins its season on Sept. 1 against San Jose State in the Coliseum.
