Williams has three official visits in mind

West Orange running back Dexter Williams has already taken unofficial visits to Ohio State, Tennessee, Clemson, Louisville and Cincinnati this summer. Now, he has three official visits penciled in for the fall.

BEAVERTON, Ore — Dexter Williams is committed to Miami, but there is another big city that has his eye.

Williams said Tuesday that he is 80-percent committed to the Canes, and while USC has only been discussed as a school on the cusp of his recruitment, that other 20-percent may land the Trojans an official visit.

“Once I get to there, and I feel more comfortable, that will tell me more about California,” said Williams. “I just need to get out there and get a feel for the school.

“I know I’m taking an official visit to USC and Michigan as well. I might also officially visit Notre Dame too if I can’t get out there this summer on my own.”

In addition to Miami, Williams is developing a list of schools he wants to maintain contact with during his senior season.

“I have those three schools in USC, Michigan and Notre Dame, plus Florida and Ohio State,” said Williams.

Williams, after injuring his ankle in a May inter-squad scrimmage, was not expected to participate at The Opening. Wednesday, the 6-foot, 190-pound four-star tailback not only participated, but scored a touchdown on a deep ball right down the middle of the field for team Fly Rush.

Even on a bum ankle, it’s that type of explosiveness and competitiveness the Trojans coaching staff covets.

“Actually, as soon as I got here (at The Opening) they had sent me a letter saying that they really want me to come out and see them,” said Williams. “The coaches there actually saw me play as a freshman and they’ve always kept their eye on me ever since.”

Although USC hasn’t landed any players from West Orange High School or Winter Garden (Fla.), Williams knows his Florida Trojans.

“Man, it’s a blessing,” said Williams. “The University of Southern California is so far away, and to know that they are watching me from the other side of the country... It's such a good feeling.

“It’s also great to know that they have some Florida players on their roster. They have Leonard Williams and Quinton Powell from Mainland. I would have a chance to play with a couple of those guys.

“It’s all about those Florida boys -- always. Plus, USC is known as a running back university with a lot of tradition.”

However, outside of football, Williams knows nothing about Southern California. Well, nothing outside what may be written on a tourism pamphlet.

“I’ve never been out there,” said Williams. “I just know the weather is hot and it’s beautiful.”

USC assistant coach Tee Martin is recruiting the state of Florida for the Trojans, but Williams stays in contact with much of the staff via social media.

I’ve talked to almost every single coach,” said Williams. “I talk to the coaches almost everyday on messaging. I like USC a lot.

“I’m going to watch them this season and a few other teams. I’ll see how things go and then try close things down midway through the season in order to make a decision on where I want to go.”
