Wednesday practice quick slant

The USC defense got the better of the offense as the Trojans went at each other for the first day of shells. Cornerback Chris Hawkins and the secondary used the step up in phyiscal play to their advantage.

  • Big construction day outside Howard Jones Wednesday as they're repaving McClintock with a dozen major pieces of construction equipment. Plenty of noise. No need for the music.

  • Safety Su'a Cravens remains out with step throat. Cravens tweeted out this morning that "Adversity has come early for me, but when I get back it's on. I will be the hardest working Trojan. Just wait." Cravens did attend practice, but did not participate in drills.

  • It's the first day in shoulder pads with helmets, jerseys and shorts but kickers Andre Heidari and Matt Boermeester get the early attention warming up and booming kickoffs deep into the end zone.

  • Quarterback Cody Kessler directs the first group to a score on a quick post from 12 yards out to Nelson Agholor.

  • Cornerback Kevon Seymour dresses in a shirt and shorts Wednesday and does some light work in special team drills.

  • Second 11 on 11 series is more thud contact, and the defense likes that. The front seven makes it hard on the first and second team offenses to run the football.

  • Defense looks really quick to the football, as expected, and no doubt with the upper hand with shoulder pads on Wednesday.

  • First "oooh" of the day goes to Adoree Jackson in with the second team offense split out wide. He is covered but gets back to make the catch thanks to his sheer athletic ability.

  • Next play is trips right with JuJu smith and Adoree Jackson lined up behind one another. The freshman receivers continue to get a lot of work early on in camp.

  • In seven on seven red zone work, Kessler-to-Allen and Browne-to-Dixon touchdown passes before Dixon cramps up and gets some fluids at the end of practice. Sark says to him "at least your last play was a touchdown.”

  • Smith and Jackson get some work with the first team offense later in the team session. With the defense focused on them, Max Browne checks down the plat to Tre Madden. The running backs with be a big part of the passing game for USC this season.

  • Not to be outdone, Jalen Greene comes on to fire a touchdown strike to walk-on tight end Ted Baker. However, next throw, freshman Lamont Simmons jumps a route for an interception, strip ball.

  • Cornerback Devian Shelton was out Wednesday with what looks like a sprained ankle that caught up to him after practice started. Also getting cooled off at the end is offensive guard Jordan Simmons, whose done much more than the training staff expected the first three days of practice.

  • Holder Anthony Neyer having to flip sides for his right- and left-footed kickers. Matt Boermeester wins today's field goal showdown converting 41 and 46-yarders that Heidari misses. For the second time in three days, the blueshirt newcomer has the better of it.

  • The offense struggles in goal line passing drills as Josh Shaw out muscles George Farmer. Farmer did come back later for a grab in the end zone.  Cody Kesller has a pick on a batted ball at the LOS that Leon McQuay III gets credit for.

  • With a loose ball fumble, the defense gets three turnovers in the red zone. Good news for them, Steve Sarkisian says, but it says something about the offense as well. Sark says he wants to see if they come back Thursday in the Coliseum.

  • Nelson Agholor with a pair of inside slant catches from Kessler, which converts to a touchdown. No officials and a very aggressive defense made life tough for the offense. Top Stories
