Banner ready to tackle the challenge

USC redshirt sophomore Zach Banner appears ready to claim a starting spot on the Trojans offensive line...

Video, USC offensive tackle Zach Banner discusses his progress through the first week of fall camp...

He's receiving praise from his fellow offensive linemen, the defensive line, and even coach Steve Sarkisian is getting in the mix.

"I don’t know if there is a bigger player in college football first of all," Sarkisian said of the 6-foot-9 350-pound Banner. "And he plays to that, he understands that. He uses his length, his size, to his advantage."

Could 2014 be the year Banner takes over at right tackle?

"Everyday coach [Tim] Drevno is just working him on pad level, pad level," said Sarkisian. "And that’s a hard thing to do when you are 6-foot-9, to play low. But to his credit, Zach is very bright, he takes the hard coaching Coach Drevno gives him."

The redshirt sophomore is coming off season ending surgery, in which he had hip impingements in both his left and right hips repaired. Banner says his flexibility has improved since undergoing the procedures.

Making the challenge at right tackle even greater for Banner this fal, most of those reps have come against defensive lineman Leonard Williams, a projected top ten pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Banner has taken exclusively first team reps through the Trojans first five days of camp.
