Is that it? Are we almost finished? Did the GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile, Ala., in front of a crowd closer to 40 fans than Ladd-Peebles Stadium's 40,000 capacity, did that almost finish it off Sunday?
Is next Monday's championship, the 39th game of this postseason, the end of it?
Yes, yes, yes and yes.
But we're not complaining. We liked it. Liked it a lot. It is what it is even if it wasn't what USC fans hoped it would be early in the season. But it worked for the Pac-12, 6-2 and smiling and way out ahead of the rest of the Power Five conferences -- and isn't that what it's all about . . . Just Sayin'.
*** And how else to scout USC's opening opponent for 2015, Arkansas State, than by watching the -- OK, we didn't catch their nickname at the GoDaddy the other day -- but we do know their colors are red and black. What we did see was how they really better get some athletes on defense if the 63 points the -- OK, just looked it up, they're the Red Wolves -- gave up in losing to Toledo is any indication . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Or how else to hear ESPN''s Rod Gilmore -- a Pac-12 guy from Stanford who should know better -- comparing Tennessee tailback Jalen Hurd to -- get ready for it -- USC's Marcus Allen in the Taxslayer Bowl. And sure, we know Rod said his bell may have still been ringing from trying to tackle Marcus back in the day but please, Rod, dial it back on comparing players to Marcus . . . Just Sayin.
*** As for USC, the Trojans did get to go to San Diego -- on a bus -- and that's better, if you're going to be in a border town, than spending New Year's Eve in El Paso . . . Just Sayin'.
*** But what the heck happened to the Gator Bowl? You have all these postseason games now and there's no more Gator Bowl? . . . Just Askin'.
*** There are, as we said, the Taxslayer Bowl and the Cactus Bowl and the B&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl and the Gildan New Mexico Bowl and the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl and the Boca Raton Bowl and the Quick Lane Bowl and the Bitcoin St. Petersburg Bowl and the Duck Commander Independence Bowl and the Belk Bowl and the AdvoCare V100 Bowl -- but no more Gator Bowl? C'mon . . . Just Sayin'.
*** But the National University Holiday Bowl was more than just a game for USC, it was also 14 additional practices for a Trojans team with a ton of freshmen that got a chance for an early start on 2015, and nine wins for Steve Sarkisian, although we've decided that after surviving another swoon in the fourth quarter, it was still 2014 in Troy . . . Just Sayin'.
*** But the story of this postseason isn't USC's story. Maybe next year when a run at the Pac-12 championship game and the College Football Playoffs has to be a part of the plan for this bunch of Trojans . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Nope, this year it's the SEC's story despite the welcome absence of that annoying "SEC, SEC, SEC" chant this week that has disappeared with an SEC team from the trophy presentation now for the second straight year and been eliminated from even a championship game appearance this time around . . . Just Sayin'.
*** How else, had it not been for bowl season, would we have known that Fox Sports' Stewart Mandel, whom we think does a terrific job of college football punditry, would have to crawl back his November proclamation that the Pac-12 West was the best division in any sport ever -- EVER. Of course that was before Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and LSU all lost -- and LSU's loss came to a beat-up Notre Dame team playing on its hands and knees. And yes, Stewart now admits, the SEC had gamed him . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Then there's Stewart's Fox Sports podcast bud, Bruce Feldman, who joined him to predict the semifinals games would produce an Alabama-Florida State final. Maybe they could come up with a consolation game like they used to have at the Final Four in basketball for those two . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Hard to believe this pair of now West Coast guys could miss that the best division in college football is right here, in the Pac-12 South, with five ranked and nine-win-minimum teams playing right before their very eyes . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Not that this should surprise any of us. Once the playoff went to four teams signalling the end of the SEC's ability to game the system, to always get its best team in the title game and hope for a stiff like Notre Dame two years ago showing up on the other side, it was over . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Which maybe should have been already tipped off by the way that while better USC teams would get upset on the way to potential championships in the Pac-12, the SEC pretender never did. They were great at that. Once USC was out of the way -- for competitive and then NCAA sanctions reasons -- it was clear sailing for the SEC designee . . . Just Sayin'.
*** How many more BCS titles would USC have won if it had been a Final Four format -- we'd say 2003 and 2008 for starters . . . Just Sayin'.
*** But then look at how this year would have gone under the old playoff formula: Are you ready for that Alabama-Florida State championship game after that Oregon-Ohio State Rose Bowl for third place the way our Fox Sports duo was? . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Sorry SEC. Your time may be up. Get some more, many more, cutting-edge offensive coaches. Yeah, we know about Lane Kiffin and Gus Malzahn. You'll need more than that to win two postseason bowl games especially if your D-linemen and linebackers don't look any different from Oregon's and Ohi State's . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Oh, and better get some quarterbacks . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Which may all be playing into Nick Saban's decision to open with USC in 2016. Can't avoid those pesky Pac-12ers any longer . . . Just Sayin'.
*** Sure, the SEC is not quite going home-and-home here. Not yet. You do you realize it's two whole time zones from Tuscaloosa to LA and the late arrival back home Sunday for the Tide after a trip to the West Coast would force them to keep the library open late the next day. Can't disrupt the student-athletes' schedules like that just for a football game . . . Just Sayin'.You can follow me on Twitter at @dweber3440 or email me at email@example.com.
